Man opens fire at South Side business

Suspect holds police at bay

August 27, 2003 — A disgruntled worker opened fire at a South Side warehouse. Six people--including the gunman-- were shot. One victim has died. Two others are in critical condition, and the conditions of the other victims are unknown at this time.

Police say the suspect was able to walk out of the building. It is not clear if his injuries were self-inflicted or from the shootout with police.

A huge police presence-- including snipers, SWAT teams, and negotiators--were called to the one-story used auto parts business at 3912 S. Wallace (near Union) around 8:45 a.m. Police believe the gunman may have been scheduled for termination or recently fired.

Some streets in the area, near Bridgeport and Canaryville neighborhoods, are closed. Several buildings that would have been in the way of police snipers were evacuated in the area, said one witness. The employees at the building were told they would not be able to enter the building for another couple hours.
