LEGISLATIVE HEARING ON PROPOSITION 54 IS A FARCE
SACRAMENTO - On August 27, 2003 the Assembly and Senate Judiciary Committees will hold a joint hearing on roposition 54. This hearing will produce no report, make no recommendation and add no value to a civil discussion regarding Proposition 54s intent of ending the current system of racial classifications. The Legislative Analysts Office (LAO) has already provided a careful analysis of the measure, which will appear in the voter pamphlet.
The opposition has hijacked this hearing, using it to call on their buddies in the legislature to provide a venue to once again spread their distortions and misrepresentations. It reveals the vastness of the network dedicated to preserving a racial classification system created by slave owners that will never allow us to move completely beyond the auction block as long as we embrace it.
We, the proponents, present a simple idea that has endured in this country: a colorblind government. Since the Declaration of Independence proclaimed that all men are created equal, we as a nation have struggled and fought our way toward this ideal.
Those who would try to redefine this idea to one of color-consciousness have institutional interests in maintaining the current system of group identity, group victims, and pitting one group against the other. Their institutional interests seem to be dependent on preserving government-sanctioned racial and ethnic identity politics.
We acknowledge that those with an institutional interest in preserving racial categorization outnumber those of us who want colorblindness by, probably 100:1 during the campaign, as will be in evidence at the hearing, but we believe the numbers will be reversed on October 7, 2003.

If you see any "coverage" of this event -- please let me know!

Yes, Prop 54 will be on the recall ballot along with Prop 53, which will divert an increasing percentage of the budget to "infrastructure," which includes water, parks, roads, schools, etc. owned by state and local governments.

Here are a few excerpts from what's behind the following
URL.
http://www.yeson53.org/press.html [...]
Yes on California's Future, Yes on Proposition 53 is a coalition of educators, local governments, public safety officials, environmentalists, employers, and labor organizations committed to building the facilities California needs to protect its economy and prepare for the future. For more information and a copy of the suit, you may visit www.yeson53.org.
[...]
Yes on Californias Future Chairman Jack Stewart said. Stewart also serves as the President of the California Manufacturers and Technology Association.
[...]
The Proposition 53 campaign is a coalition of employers, unions, local government officials, law enforcement and educators who understand that Californias crumbling infrastructure must be fixed and new investments must be made to make California a good place to live and do business in the decades ahead.
[...]
n mid-June, the initiative's proponents decided the recall vote was a certainty and hunkered down for a fall election, said Dan Pellissier, campaign manager for the measure. Because of the compressed timeline, the proponents will depend on existing networks, such as the League of California Cities, to get out the message.

I see familyop (thanks!) already posted the website and excerpts.
Prop 53 is a referendum that the legislature put on the ballot, unlike Prop 54 which was an initiative for which voters petitioned.
The democrats, unions, and environmentalists support Prop 53 because it will ensure more money to their causes (instead of relying on bond propositions at nearly every election, although those may still continue).

Thank you for the data. What is 53? More special interest spending with money CA doesn't have, and for Unions.

Thank you, heleny. It's the same old boondoggle of spending and for special interest Dem-union pals. Did I ever tell you how much I hate the "bond" issues in CA? Bet you do too! :)
