Intel Corp. plans to invest more than $200 million in a new semiconductor-chip facility in central China, highlighting the country's increasingly central role in the global electronics supply chain and delivering a much-needed boost to Beijing's campaign to channel investments into China's hinterland.

Too bad the U.S. isn't willing to lower the restrictions on trade to make ourselves more competitive in receiving such capital investments. This would have been a nice boost to some town. Maybe people on FR and elsewhere will ask Bush and their representatives in Congress to start going after unions, removing the federal minimum wage, getting rid of federal labor laws and federal environmental restrictions instead of seeking to punish Intel and other Americans for choosing the cheapest price on something. Until then, more power to Intel and others for being smart since their not being stupid saves us all money in the long run.

Yes, I know for damned sure I'd work for $2/day making microchips, if only the govt would allow it. Screw Intel anyway. AMD isn't helping the commies yet.

great...lets give up our standard of living so that the Chinese dictators and Intel can make a buck.

Do you think its free trade to be made to work for penies to the dollar at the point of a gun? I call it slavery and those that participate in it have no morals.

Free trade is only good if both sides play by the same rules.

Maybe whipping businesses until they pack up and leave wasn't such a good idea after all!

It does give the business haters pleasure however.

Do you think Intel is obligated to work here? Do you think if Intel moved its entire operation and company to China that would only mean someone else would do what they do?

No, not any more. In the olden days (the 80's and early 90's) companies often CHOSE the US because of tariffs placed on importation of goods. With NAFTA, entire industries relocated to Mexico. Now with China enjoying the same benefits, industries are relocating there.

Intel managed to survive when they had all of their plants and employees in the US. So did IBM, Ford, and a thousand other big companies.

When you eliminate import tariffs, you eliminate the incentive to employ Americans.

Intel executives said construction of the plant's first phase could start as early as next year, take an estimated 20 months and cost about $200 million.......

A $200 million fab is too cheap to be making Pentiums/Celrons. Will be making other chips with lots of good technology for the ChiComs to steal on premises

Guess what...Intel sells product all over the world. Will US import tariffs help them compete outside the USA. Of course not!

Unless you assume that only Americans are intelligent enough to design microprocessors, which is obviously false, then either the cost of production inside the USA must be reduced, or production by them or someone else outside the USA will supply the world market.

Well, I don't many computers running anything but Intel or AMD.

A few short years ago, the US wouldn't even allow 1 ghz processors to be sold to China because they were considered supercomputers which would help China's nuclear arms industry, and arms industry in general. Now, we a building them a plant that will hold the most sophisicated chip manufacturing equipment in the world.

China is using all the proceeds from its cut in foreign business to buy arms and build up its war making machine...all this while using its people as slaves. I hear the same arguments were made about doing business with the nazis in the 30's.
I want nothing to do with that abomination of a nation. If you do, I feel sorry for you.
May God help you see what you support.

Much is made of China's "capitalism" and entrepreneurs. ("Princelings?")

The Soviets had the original New Economic Plan (NEP) and their "nepmen." They were very effective and helped Lenin / Stalin a lot. They became about 40 percent of the Soviet economy. Western investors flocked to Russia. I think in Russian investor is pronounced "useful idiot."

So what happened when Soviet communist ideologues said, Enough is enough!

Not to worry about Intel and other American "capitalist" corporations. Tax payer funded programs are there to subsidize them and cover their losses when the chi-coms' NEP reaches critical mass.

Mean time shareholders and execs. Just think of all that money saved by using "cheap labor!" Oh.. and those chi-com missiles thingies. . . .

I'm just an old paleo wet blanket. Can't help it. It's that repeating history thing -- only this time it's for all the marbles IMO.

You need to keep your story straight. On the one hand, you relatively consistently tell us all that this sort of "free trade" and offshoring is great news for America. Now, you are saying this is bad, but the result of American "unions" - as if unions have any meaningful impact on Intel. Which is it?

Haha. Nice. Tariffs "incentivize"? That is great. Freedom is slavery.
