The coverage of the unlamented death of John Geoghan proves several points that FR Catholic bashers like to ignore:

(1) The media pounced so ferociously on this story not because of concern for the victims of child abuse or because of righteous indignation against the perpetrators: they trumpeted the story as loudly as they could for more than a year because it made the Catholic Church look bad.

(2) The reason why they wanted to publicly degrade the Catholic Church is because the Catholic Church's teachings on abortion, contraception, fornication, sodomy and divorce are directly opposed to everything the media stand for.

Now the media is showing its true colors: mourning a child molester and attacking his killer as a "homophobe."

I hope all the stupid kneejerk FReepers who allied with the liberal media against the hated Catholic Church realize that they've been played for suckers.

If you look at the media, it is thier job to report, how it comes about is another story. What a news story is supposed to do is report the facts as they are and let the reader make thier own assumptions. Now we all know that we are human, and personal emotions can find thier way into what is written, but to categorize every journalist, etc.. into one category isn't nice.
I have been offended at the handling of some stories, especially of the military in the '90s, but after I stepped back and actually looked at what was being reported, I realized that certain facts were left out because they were only known to the military at the time and were deterimental to operations. Now, that's going deep with that one, but it's just one of many examples.
Now, as for the story, it was a big event, one that is digging at the very core of Catholicism. Now, who did that? The reporters? The victims? No, the very men that were supposed to be our spiritual guides. Who really is to blame on this one?
The media is not "mourning" a child molestor! I saw no sympathy for what happened to him, only a story about his death in JAIL. His killer is not being hailed as a "hero". I see it as more of a realization that within the corrections system, thier is a sort of vigilante law going on among prisoners that can't be stopped.
I say that it is sad that the priest corrupted the Catholic Church with his atrocities and met an untimely death at the hands of another corrupt individual. His actions put him where he was, Justice was served in the courthouse, not in the jail, and Geoghan's killer will be judged by a higher power than we.

I hope all the stupid kneejerk FReepers who allied with the liberal media.....

That's pretty stupid. Freepers can think for themselves, and your need to categorize critics into some wierd intellectual uniformity is bizarre. Ad hominem is a tactic of the weak.

the flaw in your reasoning is that it is possible for both the media and the Catholic hierarchy to be scum.

I don't hold out much hope that they will realize that fact.
