After decades of turning their backs on the things their...parents held dear, many boomers have begun to turn back to those old institutions in a frantic attempt to achieve some inner fulfillment...

The selfish, narcissistic, superficial, and self-indulgent boomers are now looking for self-fulfillment, eh? Well, this much is certainly true: many of these boomers, as they get older, are going to try to appeal to all the ole' virtues that they themselves have systematically undone -- family, responsibility, tradition -- as they make their plea (or else demand) for us all to take care of them.

While not disagreeing with the general contention of the article about the empty lives of many political activists of the sixties, I do have problems with characterizing all leftist agitators from that period as Boomers. Boomers strictly speaking refers to people born in a time frame from 1946 to 1960. The great and overwhelming majority of leftist nuts agitating and committing crimes during the sixties and seventies were born before the baby boom.

Undoubtedy many Boomers were also self-absorbed fools living empty lives, but to characterize all of them as sixties activists is plainly wrong. Many were like my older brother who served in Vietnam and at age fifty-six could still give young Marines or Rangers a run for their money. Still the toughest person I've ever met (started at middle linebacker for our high school as a one-hundred and thirty-five pound sophomore beating out the senior incumbent...thought I'd throw that in).

I'll bet there are great numbers of generation xers and later who lead lives that are just as empty and self-absorbed as the woman in article. But let's not be hasty and generalize all people from particular times as being the same. Most Boomers or persons from that era were not like Ohlson.
