DURANGO, Colo. (AP) -- A woman's scheme to avoid prison by faking her own death in a truck accident came undone when a childhood friend, now a sheriff's deputy, spotted her by chance far from home.
Misty Quackenbush, 27, of Cortez, was supposed to have been sentenced July 11 to four years in prison on her guilty plea to distribution of methamphetamines.
Instead, she allegedly placed personal identification in an abandoned pickup near a reservoir, doused the truck with blood of unknown origin and fled, officials said.
About four weeks later, former Montezuma County Deputy Brandon Brown, now a Texas lawman, spotted Quackenbush in Shamrock, Texas, some 600 miles from Cortez. Brown had read about her supposed death.
"I'm still kind of shocked. Her comment to me was 'I must have been meant to get caught, because, what are the odds?" Brown said.
Quackenbush was sentenced Friday in Durango to five years in prison - the original four plus one for jumping bail.

"One for the Name File."
Actually, Quackenbush is quite a famous old American name. Those here of the 2nd Amendment persuasion will recognize it as the brand of a famous, if funky, arms company. Quackenbush .22 rifles were the ones often presented as first rifles to boys at one time.
The name lives on.

More on Quackenbush:
These days, one member of the Quackenbush family is manufacturing big-bore air rifles, in .308 and even .50 caliber. These operate at up to 2500 psi pressures, and fire projectiles over 180 grains. Apparently, they've even been used for large game, such as deer.
Google for "Quackenbush Rifle" for more info. I was fascinated.

I happen to own a Quackenbush .22 rifle. It belonged to my Great Grandfather shortly before the turn of the century (20th Century of course).

Yes. In fact, California recently had an Insurance Commissioner named Chuck Quackenbush.
It's her full name that's irresistible.

I met Hugh Quackenbush (VP for Schwab) at a broker's open house. He got the troops moving, they were talking to each other and worthless.
I recognized the name because he was just quoted in a major magazine. He said they love to quote him just to get the name in the article. Not pretentious at all.
To: Rudder
I thought the name was Hillary Rottencrotch.
