McClintock Facing Republican Threats?
Belly of the Beast Blog ^ | August 24, 2004 | Eric Hogue

Now that Bill Simon has left the building, State Senator Tom McClintock currenlty has the 'only growing campaign'. I'm reading the LA Times article on Simon's departure this morning and I find this nugget of political muscle.

I am beginning to think it is all hopeless if even Freepers are rooting for a RINO who opposes Prop. 54.

FYI Tom McClintock received over THREE MILLION VOTES in the November election, 100K more votes than Simon and more votes than any other Republican running for statewide office in spite of being outspent 5-1 and still came within 17k votes of winning...
"came within 17k votes of winning" in a two-man race means that he "lost." :o)
UNFORTUNATELY, there is NO PRIZE in politics for second place.

I would sure rather see McClintock run against Boxer, where we need a strong conservative candidate, than to risk ruining his career as Governor.

Who cares if Arnold ruins his political career? He never had one.

The reality is that the next CA gov is going to be almost as unpopular as the current one, because the free lunch can no longer be delivered from government coffers.

A Republican would cut services, presumably, if the Legislature agrees. The unrealistic socialist utopian electorate would hate that. The Rat would raise taxes, making it even less attractive for businesses and people with real jobs to stick it out and the budget falls further into the red.

Here's the choice. The Rat makes it worse, or the Republican fails because he's suddenly the scapegoat, and one that all the special interest groups and nannystate lovers hate.

Where's the upside to that job?

And from where will you get your "feeling" on who has a chance of winning? The polls? If so, same question.

I'm not your enemy, the RATs are.

I'm tempted to just vote for Bustamante since the CA GOP is out to lunch on this recall business. If the RATS can come together on one candidate the GOP should have the sense to do the same thing. It might not be a bad idea for McClintock to remain in the race a few more weeks just to keep Arnie from abandoning conservative principles any more than he already has.

McClintock is trailing AS in the polls.

So is Arnold. The difference is that one is falling and one is rising.

DG, the upside is that McClintock who is an intelligent, principled man with credentials will clean up the mess in Sacramento. That is the whole purpose for ejecting the Dimwit Davis! We who live in CA cannot afford another RINO. The last RINO Pete Wilson, who promised not to raise taxes in 1990, did not get his seat warm in Sacramento before he did just that and right in the middle of the first recession in CA history. And it was the largest tax bill in CA history. Vote for another RINO?I don't think so! Been there, done that! The liberal Aunold wants 60 days to learn the job. Well we don't have time to train an actor to be a governor. Tom McClintock has a plan to balance the budget and do so without raising taxes and/or fees. McClintock will rescind the triple car tax. McClintock will void the 42 BILLION DOLLAR ELECTRICAL CONTRACTS. And McClintock will reform the CA workmans' comp we now have with the AZ plan that will cut the costs by 2/3's. And that will all be done before lunchtime his first day in office. Tom McClintock will do more to fix the problems in Sacramento in 60 minutes than Aunold will do in 60 days! So he's been pushing his ideas since 1995 and still hasn't managed to accomplish it. That shows you what he'll be able to do after he's elected. If he hasn't been able to get his ideas across in 8 years, then he has little chance of doing it after he's elected and become target No. 1.

He’s not been the governor yet but he has been the fiscal canary down the spending coalmine of California. He knows exactly what he’ll do on his first day in office and has stated so many times. What part of his platform do you disagree with?

No! Let me say this slowly, (so that you can grasp it)! I'm voting for a conservative Republican, who is best qualified, (among all candidates), to right the Ship of State in California. It is a matter of principle, of course, but more to the point, it is a choice I make in my own best interest. I don't rely on others to define what my best interests are! Get it?

Here here!

The Perot in this race is McClintock.

Neither candidate is "the Perot".

They are both Republicans, one liberal, and one conservative. Neither's supporters should slander the other's, but they do anyway. If Bustamante wins, each side will blame the other.

NOTE, this wouldn't happen if the California GOP stopped running to the Left each and every election.

Tom McClintock will direct his loyal supporters to "do the right thing" and vote for Arnold.

If he does this, then he is not worth voting for in the first place. Even Bill Simon didn't endorse Schwarzenegger... McClintock isn't the type to give up all principles just to make "winning" easier, and neither am I.

I don't think he can do any of that without the active cooperation of the legislature. And it's not within the power of McClintock or the legislature to rescind the electricity contracts. That would take a series of very unlikely rulings by the courts.

From what I can tell, McClintock definitely has the best fiscal plan for California. Implementing it is not something he can do in a morning, if ever.

I don't think McClintock will surge in popularity enough to beat both AS and Butamante. I could be wrong about that, and in an unprecedented election like this one, it's certainly too early to count him out. It's always desirable to get the most conservative candidate elected, but it's not always possible. I just hate to see Barbara Boxer get a free ride to re-election, when Tom McClintock could take her out.

I don't have a vote in your elections, of course, and this ultimately a decision for those of you in California. But it's not at all unlikely that the Republicans could end up with nothing after all the votes are counted.

As the spoiler, he's the Perot in this election, not AS.

McClintock was the first Republican to announce his candidacy. Stop the lies.

Don't worry, Darryl Issa will take care of this one...

Come on - Simon dropping out of the race gives McClintock at least 18% to Arnold's 22% (Or there around).

Arnold peaked, all the California polls have Arnold in the 20-25% range, and McClintock combined with Simon's votes puts Tom in the High Teens.

At least wait 2 weeks before saying Tom can't win.

PS: if McClintock surpasses Arnold's numbers will you say that Arnold should drop out in order to elect the "Most Electable" candidate win?

That's a good point. Issa would make a good candidate, and the GOP owes him one.

McClintock is the Perot of this election at this point and is being a useful idiot for the other side.

What an odd comparison to make from someone trying to call themselves "AmericanUnited" to flame McClintock with so much hatred.

Lets see;

1. No ideological platform, check

2. No committment to policy decisions, check

3. Vague populist cliches repeated over and over, check

4. Rapid psycho supporters convinced they found an outsider for "reform", huge check.

Yes, that does sound precisely like Perot. Might I ad that he pulled enough votes away from a real Republican to elect Clinton. Perot also got stuck at about 20% with his BS stealth campaign. What are (R)nolds numbers the past 3 polls? hmmm?

The only one in need of growing up, is stary eyed kids like yourself, "AmericaUnited"
