"nobody else is at 'fault'."
I only mentioned this pre-emptively, because he acts as if he's a victim, but he's not.
When he was on the 500 calorie a day diet, he lost weight, which proves his metabolism is still working normally.
Although I too, feel sympathy for him, he must deal with his addiction to carbohydates. After all, he 'chose' to drink 20 colas a day, and probably still does, to some extent.

If his weight is not caused by eating large amounts of food, why would stomach stapling help him? And soda drinks I am not sure, but I don't think they would be slowed down by a gastric bypass.
I think he has to be eating, and if he can barely move, someone has to be feeding him.
If he is on social security disability, he should have medicare. If he truly has a life threatening condition, wouldn't medicare kick in to at least some extent?

Me too. Been on Adkins about three years. Works great.

I've been doing Atkins with good results when I don't cheat. Good luck to you. I considered Atkins a couple of years ago but I realized that my real problem was just too darned much fast food and lack of exercise.
At 5'10", 225 pounds was way too much for me to be carrying. My cholesterol was almost 200 even on Lipitor. When I significantly cut back on the fast food, I started losing weight pretty quickly. I've slowly lost my way down to the 165-170 range. I've been taken off the Lipitor now and am maintaining a normal cholesterol (in the 150's, I think). It's also nice to have my blood sugar back down in the low-normal range rather than borderline-high.
I can pretty much eat what I want but I still restrict my fast and fried food to a time or two a week rather than every day. I use 170 pounds as my trigger point to pay a little more attention to what I'm eating until I get back under it.

Is it at all possible to have just a tiny bit of compassion for this man?
To: Dubya
The Atkins diet might save him.

Maybe he should NEVER have gone back to a 'normal' amount. By the time someone gets this big, the problem has to be more than simply food. It seems to me that it's kind of like a snowball. You keep gaining, and feeling worse about yourself, and then there is an edge that you just tip over and the discouragement and the weight just becomes too much to battle EVERY DAY, FOREVER. It must be a terribly difficult fight.
I wish him well.

Sorry to hear that.
There is a 1 in 200 chance of dying from the surgery, and as you well know, it's real.
It's why this type of surgery is the absolute last resort for people who's condition is going to kill them.
To: Grit
I believe it would.
When I have my yearly check up the Dr says Everything great.
I din't tell him about me being on the Adkins and I ask him one time what he though about it. He said don't get on that diet, it will kill you. I never told him I been on it a few years.
At my age for everything to check out good is good. I have to take no medication.
Today is my birthday BTW.

I live about 100 miles from this man. I may send him a letter and see if I can visit with him.
I'm not sure how to go about doing that yet.

My best friend needs to lose weight fast. He just had another heart attact. I went to Sams Club yesterday and bought him a set of Atkins new books and gave them to his sister who takes care of him.
Sams has a pkg of 3 books for about $24. I haven't read them yet.

I wonder if he permanently screwed himself up with that ridiculous 20 cans of sugary pop a day. That has to have had some long-term effect on his body.

He may have. I believe the Adkins diet will pull him out of it though. Most people who have never been on the Adkins and did it the way he says to do it can believe what it will do for your health. I was a heart Pat.a few years ago, operation and all that stuff. Now I don't have any health problems at all.
Most of the time I am just maintaining on it.

I wish him well too,
He's a relatively young man and there's still time for him to reverse this situation, before it kills him.
I've watched and cheered on a member of our own family, very similar to his situation, who was up to almost 400 at one point two years ago. He discovered the Atkins diet and has slowly returned to a more normal weight, now around 250 and he's still decreasing.
It's not a temporary diet, it's a different way of eating and thinking about food, that lasts for the rest of your life. But you have to have the willpower to do it.

I am very sorry. My wife Eve and me have been married 49 years. I don't know how I can take it if something happens to her.
God bless and comfort you.
