But often the quality isn't the same. Those cheap ass DVD players or tv that Wal-Mart sells that are made over there, often are 30% less, but they break down twice as often.

The last time I did this was on a DVD player, and I just quit doing that. I paid $89, but it only lasted 10 months.

Wal-Mart sells cheap crap. It would be the equivalent of us shutting down every gourmet restaurant in this country, and then replacing it with $3 for all you can eat buffets. Yeah, you might get "more" food, and for cheaper, but it really hasn't improved your quality of life one bit. You are fat, and eating crap.

I encourage everybody to look at the price of things at a place like Wal-Mart, and picture that this price came after accounting for labor, materials, shipping, wholesaler mark up, wal-mart mark up, and Wal-Mart is still making a good profit on it. If you try to do the math on these products, you have to know that something is being short changed. Labor is not the only place where quality is being shortchanged. Materials, quality control are as well.

I really don't think that's a disputable point. Nobody who demands quality and reliability buys electronics, power tools or any other "high-ticket" item from Wal-Mart.

But, apparently we're in the minority. I shop Wal-Mart mainly for groceries (same brands, lower prices) and never fail to see people with a cartload of crappy TVs or DVD players.

People just don't respect brand any more for these items. These same people have a definate Coke-or-Pepsi or Ford-or-Chevy preference.

I'm old enough to remember when Curtis-Mathes was the Cadillac of TVs (also back when Cadillac was the Cadillac of cars). People had a preference bewteen, say, Zenith and RCA.

What happened? Those companies bailed overseas and became just like everyone else.

Agreed.

WalMart has gone downhill a lot since Sam died and most of what they sell is crap.

I have one of those Super K-Marts near me and normally use it now rather than WalMart.
