There are too many Republicans in this race and the people of our state simply cannot risk a continuation of the Gray Davis legacy. For these reasons, I think it is wise to step aside."

This is what separates a statesman from a hack.

McClintock would be a good Lt. Governor, but will throw the race to the rats if he continues to run.

Correction: McClintock... will throw the race to the rats if he continues to run past September 30, 2003 and Arnold is the clear frontrunner.

A Bustamante win would not be the worst thing for Republicans. He is even more of a leftist wacko than Davis. CA would continue its downward spiral with no one but the Dems to blame. If Arnold or any other Republican wins, he will be saddled with the most overwhelming left-wing wacko legislature in the country. It's unlikely he could implement any fixes anyway. But, he would take the blame and the Dems could say that it proves the whole thing was outside their control and continue to blame everyone else.
