In 1945 I was singing Mairzy Doats and Swingin' On A Star in the 5th grade - age 11!

In May 1947, the month I turned 13, I came close to meeting President Truman. Represented Florida in the National Spelling Bee, and he was scheduled to receive us, but his mother was ill and he had to fly to Independence to be with her.

Did go to the White House, though, but not through it, that being renovated at the time, and much of Washington on tours - Mount Vernon by bus - back on a paddle wheeler on the Potomac.

I remember those two songs! Mama taught us the words. Wish that I could remember them all, lol. Fun songs. The first election that I remember is Eisenhower's. "I Like Ike", lol.

Congratulations on the Spelling Bee!

Have been to D.C. many times, but the most memorial was my 12th year. My little brownie camera got a workout that summer. Took a picture of a fire engine speeding down the street and it didn't even blur.

Have never been to the White House but someday I will and not to sleep in Lincolns bed either! I use to daydream about being First Lady since I couldn't be the Queen or married to Prince Charles. Of course, I daydreamed about many things then...
