[history]
President Bush announced yesterday that he is appointing Middle East scholar Daniel Pipes, who has long warned of the dangers posed by Islamic extremists, to the U.S. Institute for Peace, a federally funded think tank.
The White House said Mr. Bush decided to place Mr. Pipes on the institute's 15-member board of directors as a temporary recess appointment, circumventing Democratic opposition led by Sen. Edward M. Kennedy of Massachusetts, who blocked his confirmation in the Senate.

Good for Bush. He's no stranger to the recess appointment. We conservatives better stick by this man, he may indeed be our last, best hope. And not desert him in droves because of some perceived slight, or his failure to realize he was really "selected" to be "emperor of America".
We need to get out in '04 and vote the straight republican line for all federal offices. We need to get the partial birth abortion bill on the presidents desk, so he can sign it, because he will, after clinton vetoed it thrice. Can you imagine M. Dean doing such a thing? No, you cannot imagine it, because it would be a sheer impossibility. We need to elect a republican majority to the Senate, so the Judges can be confirmed.
We are in the muddy trenches of the culture wars. Muslim terrorists live just to kill us. Bush GETS this, we need to support him. I personally don't care how much he schmoozes Ted "the swimmer" Kennedy as long as he keeps doing the other stuff he's doing.

WHO CARES! Not that I don't like Daniel Pipes. BUT...
Who the heck cares about the "Institute for Peace"??? How about the dozens of judicial nominees being illegally blocked by Senate Democrats? Why can't we get such an appointment for some of them?
Presilla Owen? Miguel Estrada? Charles Pickering? Any of these ring a bell Mr President?
When will Bush have the balls the make a MEANINGFUL RECESS APPOINTMENT?

This is a very bold move by Bush and a clear warning to Islamists in America.
Daniel Pipes is the most lucid writer on the Islamist threat--the shrill cant from CAIR et al proves it.
His newsletter is an excellent read.

correct you are there montag, the appointment of judges is the legacy of a president. Mr. Bush will be out of office some day and what he leaves in the judges will live on for decades.
Recess Appoint these you mention and maybe Mr. Bork to really piss off these petulant demoncrats.

The Pipes appointment was condemned yesterday by the Muslim Public Affairs Council, which said in a statement that the "back door, anti-democratic recess appointment will be remembered by American Muslims and Arabs in 2004."As though the fanatics represented by the MPAC would be voting for Bush if he hadn't appointed Pipes. The democrats have the islamic terrorist vote all sewn up.
