Some daturas species have beautiful flowers and are cultivated for that reason. However, one would have to be a loon to try to get high off of the stuff.

My bad. The old Yaqui indian's name was Don Juan Matus. The latest news accuses Carlos Castanada of having made it all up and the notoriety and resultant income he enjoyed up to his death a few years ago was due a pieced-together amalgamation of Sun-Tzu, witch tales and weird drugs.

I think he came up with an ethos far more appealing than many adhered to today. Judge for yourself:

"The latest news accuses Carlos Castanada of having made it all up"

I read Carlos' books back during the seventies and heard that he had made the stories up at that time. The fact that he made up the stories only heightens his acclaim as a storyteller. I think he inserted his character in the stories as a bridge between the reader's point of view and the rather 'trippy' occurrances offered in the stories.

Ah, tonight we eat fugu!

Anyone who plays around with datura has a suicidal bent. There are at least two decorative plants growing in my back yard that will kill you if you're stupid enough to eat the foliage or seeds.

It's interesting to see natural selection in operation. It can also be very sad sometimes when parents are too lazy or stupid to do their jobs.

Though ethically blurry that was indeed an excellent literary device. I consider what he made almost on par with the Rings Trilogy and Orson Scott Card's "Seventh Son" series.
The tragedy lies in that the work was misrepresented and will always bear the stigma of fraud. This guy was a spiritual icon to the old hippie crowd second only to Timothy Leary. Imagine the screeching and lying after Castro takes that final elevator down.

I know that there are a LOT of druggies on FR- but if you are too brain-damaged to even manage to spell the name of your favorite degenerate writer correctly, perhaps you should just send out for pizza, dude. Leave the posting to those with more than two brain cells still functioning...

By the way, that "latest news" you cite is about 20 years old. Is that when you started toking heavily, or what?

"This may represent a new trend of substance abuse in this area."

Or maybe it was just a group of friends that got together after reading something like this...

Me too. I thought the story was going to be about another National Endowment for the Arts, Mapplethorpe-type thing.

Castaneda died in April of 1998. The books were always published under “Fiction” though he insisted up till the end that they were true. I can’t vouch for his degeneracy, as I never met the guy.
I don’t use recreational drugs though I tried marijuana in the 1970’s as a teenager. Gosh, Rangerairborne, I guess that moment of weakness cancels out the rest of my productive and law-abiding lifetime and permanently brands me a drug fiend. As soon as my sword arrives from Badger Blades I’ll be sure to fall on it. That’s the least I can do for occasional misspelling and overworking two functional brain cells. Thank you so much for your kind and helpful criticism.

I always liked how you italicized FReepers names when referring to them. Wish I could say I wasn't too lazy to do the same.

Romans 11:33
O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out!

I think it wasn't bright of these youngsters.
Down right ignorant to be blunt. The educational system
and government policies have failed are youth, yet again.
My nephews at 5 and 6 years old can name almost any plant
in the garden and can tell you any that are dangerous.

Proverbs 1:7
The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.

The Government has the duty to inform the people
of that which may cause harm to them. Unfortunately,
in this case they failed these youths. But, government has not been given the power to eradicate that which God has given to the people. God forbid the day comes when I hear
calls for the eradication of all possibly toxic plants.

Proverbs 9:10
The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding.

Without understanding, these youths unwisely
sought to know that which was a mystery to them.
I hope that people will see the light and the truth
of the word and live and let live. I pray for an end
to this unjust, ungodly, and unconstitutional war.

Ecclesiastes 1:13 And I gave my heart to seek and search out by wisdom concerning all things that are done under heaven: this sore travail hath God given to the sons of man to be exercised therewith.
14 I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and, behold, all is vanity and vexation of spirit.
15 That which is crooked cannot be made straight: and that which is wanting cannot be numbered.
16 I communed with mine own heart, saying, Lo, I am come to great estate, and have gotten more wisdom than all they that have been before me in Jerusalem: yea, my heart had great experience of wisdom and knowledge.
17 And I gave my heart to know wisdom, and to know madness and folly: I perceived that this also is vexation of spirit.
18 For in much wisdom is much grief: and he that increaseth knowledge increaseth sorrow.

It's verses like this that encourage lawyers to continue their obfuscations.
