I was thinking it's more like the Christians in Lithuania under the USSR.
- Don't be *too* religious, or you might be publicly denounced.
- Want to get a job? Better lose that religious bumper sticker.
- Does that church comply with *all* regulations? Let's perform an audit, just in case...
I once read a book on what the Christians in Lithuania went through. It was a real eye-opener.

I think you have captured the cultural ethos in many parts of the country. On campus ... in the newsroom ... in some cities like NYC and SanFran. Many USA subcultures have already become somewhat USSR-like in their secularist orientation.
