This is very dangerous. Illegals with drivers licenses can then use them to get voter registration applications and other services where all that is required is a driver's license.

I think that a prerequisite to getting a driver's license should be either proof of citizenship, or a green card (legal resident alien).

The flood of illegal immigrants who will get absorbed into our economy with drivers licenses will be overwhelming to California.

I swear if Davis signs this they should send in the Federal Marshalls to arrest him. This is a blatant disregard of U.S. immigration law and poses a threat to national security.

I was at the park with my friends debating the finer points of chicken grilling when the sound of a vehicle crashing into my parked car spoiled the slightly chilly Sunday afternoon air. We rushed towards the wreckage: a totaled trunk, three flat tires, and a broken axle gushing fluid. Infuriated, I confronted the guilty party, a young Latino who slurred, "Amigo, I crashed your car" before drunkenly trying to flee.

My friends eventually subdued the man as I called the police department demanding that they arrest him. I smirked with glee when the cops finally arrived to take him into custody. I hoped his license would be revoked. Then I realized he probably had none and his only punishment would be deportation.

Is that a call for allowing ILLEGALS to have licenses?

Absolutely not.

I say keep them out of the country and they cannot crash into cars.

You know anyone in California who drives for a living? Trucks? Pizza delivery? Warn them they will lose their jobs, or must accept minimum wage, or less.

That's the big money behind this scam, fronted by middle-class "ethnic" lobby groups in partnership or otherwise funded with certain industries.

It's just another profit-enhancing (short term) agenda gussied up as charity and concern. A market strategy changing laws to depress wages. Since the people most effected in California will be disproportionately latino it is arguably, and should be argued as, a racist, not anti-racist policy.

OMG.

The flawed logic is unbelievably f'd up.

Why aren't the ILLEGLAS deported? They wouldn't need liability insurance if they weren't here and driving in the first place. First drivers licences, then what? Voter registrations? These ignorant conniving rat politicians are vile. Damn, it makes me angry.

Ueberroth supports driver licenses for illegals as well...

Yesterday's Merc News..

Page 13A of yesterday's fish wrap.. Last paragraph of an article by Lori Aratani titled "Ueberroth relies on tax amnesty"

Ueberroth said he supports a measure that would grant drivers licenses to illegal immigrants that is awaiting Gov. Davis' signature. He said, however, he has not yet taken a stand on the Racial Privacy Initiative, a measure to limit state officials from collecting racial data.

What's Arnold's position?

Davis, meanwhile, appeared with Democratic Sen. Barbara Boxer in the Los Angeles beach suburb of Santa Monica, not far from Schwarzenegger's restaurant, Schatzi, to hand out $53 million in grants to environmental groups

The scary part is that these illegal immigrants can use these driver's licenses for identification of residence if they try to vote. Are there going to be any indications on these newly issued licenses that they are illegal immigrants, and not ALLOWED to vote? I hope somebody can tell me this is not going to be so! Can you imagine if this sets a precident for all states especially those that require very little or no proof of citizenship. This is such a scam to increase the Democrat voter base.

"Comparing the numbers of Hispanics who voted for Davis in 1998 and last November, we see that the governor lost 200,000 Latino votes in his reelection, mostly because he refused to sign the license bill," said Gonzalez.

So, the solution is to sign up as many border-jumpers as you can by giving them driver's licenses...thereby making it easier for them to vote. Yeah, that's legal. {sarcasm}

What's the matter, Dems? Are you running out of dead people to register?

I thought I heard on Rush or Medved that this bill is hung up in the Senate so all the amendments that have been attached to it can be read.

Of course, I could be wrong

So let me get this straight now...tell me if I'm wrong here...

It is OK for a State to violate clear Federal law and jurisdiction by allowing millions of illegal invaders not only freedom, but the full right and benefits of citizenship......however,

It is NOT ok for a State to display a sculpture of granite with the Ten Commandments in a single location.

If Davis signs this crap a stay to halt the activation of the law should be filed and prosicutions sought for those officials who supported it, including Davis. If I had the money and the time I'd do it. Its obvious that no elected official in California will fight it as proven by the derailment of prop 187.

There is such a concept as an "International Drivers Licence".
Generally, it consists of your country of origin regular drivers licence, and a document you apply for in the country you wish to drive in, that requires you to have passed a signs and laws test to prove competancy and acknowledge personal responcibility and willingness to comply with the "other" country's driving rules.
It is not a valid form of identification.
I dont remember all the details, I just remember buying a car for my military fiance and putting everything in his name, because I did not have one, and was not yet able to legally drive in Europe.
Does anyone know the legal international requirements?
I dont think the Brits, who drive on the wrong side of the road, would allow USA tourists to just rent a car and start tooling around the country, absent insurance and passing a sign test.
WTF does California think they are doing?
No legal immigrant or temporary visa holder needs to be issued a drivers licence to drive legally in the USA.
Do they?

WCBS880 09/06/2003

"If you are going to contribute to our economy, you have the right to drive to work," Davis said afterward. "Everyone benefits by having drivers on the road who know the rules of the road and presumably be a safer driver."

"I think we have to be honest about our dependency on people to do jobs Americans will not," Davis said earlier.

Question:
What do you guys think? Better if they driving without driver licence and insurance or with licence?
And why do you guys dont want to do that kind of jobs what they doing-Landscaping, moving etc. for $ 4-6?
