AMSTERDAM - A Saudi family of bankers which have been accused of financing islamic terrorism, seems to do a large portion of their funding from the Netherlands. The family owns an investment company in Amsterdam, which has funded 'islamic investments' for well over a billion dollars.
The firm is known as Al Rajhi Investment Corporation bv, located in the Drentestraat in Amsterdam-Buitenveldert. The firm is owned by the Al Rajhi Banking & Investment Corporation, one of the biggest financial institutions of Saudi Arabia.
In annual reports of the Dutch branch there are huge investments, described as 'loans' to 'international organizations' which are not named. The amount has decreased during the years: from 1,4 billion dollar in 1999 to 62 million dollar in 2001.
The AIVD (Dutch security service, formely known as BVD) did not want to comment about a possible connection between Al Rajhi Investment Corporation and the Saudi connection with the financing of radical islamic or terrorism.
The AIVD have been investigating the 'shadow side of Saudi structures' in the Netherlands and refuses every comment in order not to endanger the investigation against the firm.
The Al Rajhi-family is in the spotlight of security agencies since a list of people who financed al-Qaeda was discovered. On this list there are twenty influencial Saudi's that have financed the network of Bin Laden since it was founded.
This so called 'Golden Chain'-list was recently released from American justice-files and was discovered after the raid on the Bosnian headquarters of the Benevolence International Foundation. This organization was until recently operational in the Netherlands.
The Golden Chain-list is part of the investigation led by the AIVD to uncover the influence of Saudi Arabia. The acency works in close connection with foreign intelligence services, like the American CIA.
The Al Rajhi Banking & Investment Corporation in London announced it had no idea why the family's name was on the list: "We know for sure that the name points nor to this bank nor to the family. Thousands are named Al Rajhi."
American lawyers have placed the Al Rajhi-clan and their financial institutions on the list of hundereds of accused in the civil lawsuit demanding compensation for thousands of relatives of the September 11 attack victims.
