Schwarzenegger pledged Wednesday to protect education from any budget cuts.

That’s where he lost me.

In April 1999 I was on the hook yearly for ~$80,000 in state/federal income taxes. In 2000, 2001, and 2002 I paid $0. I probably have 25 more good years in me, but I refuse to contribute anymore. No income, no income tax. I’m out. Heading out of CA too.

Fully half of my state taxes (and a portion of my federal taxes) went to education. For the amount I’m paying I expect “the children” to be able to read in several languages. I expect them to write in several languages. I expect them to do math calculations like my HP-48. I expect them to destroy Japanese students in contests that are conducted *in Japanese*.

I expect them to eat a bag of chips and poop gold nuggets – that’s what I was paying for. Actually, the children were being fed gold nuggets and are pooping the regular poop… not even that. No dice. No Arnold. No more money. I’m done.

Somehow, I think I'll squeak by. I don't know that "the children" will.

You can't balance California's budget if education is off the table. Prop 98 funding makes up 46% of the new budget. If you ignore that, you have to cut out a quarter of the remaining budget just to keep from adding to the accumulated deficit, let alone get back in the black.

A one-fourth cut means you really would have to lay off highway patrolmen, maybe stop funding some public hospitals, etc. I think Ahnold is much more likely to hike taxes than he is to do any of these things.
