[history]
The UAW has asked Detroit's automakers to pay for voluntary abortions in its national contract talks, say officials at the union and the companies familiar with the talks.
The potentially explosive request was made to General Motors Corp. and Chrysler Group during talks about health care coverage, those officials said. They did not know whether it was also made to Ford Motor Co. during contract talks, which began in mid-July.

I wonder if the union chiefs ran this one by their membership. I doubt it, they seldom seem to care what moral or economic beliefs their membership holds, just as long as they're required by law to pay UAW dues.

But, regarding the cost of insurance which I assume the UAW does negotiate for in it's contracts, the cost of an abortion is much less than a child's birth and eighteen years of medical care.
Perhaps they see it as a cost-effective remedy.
This then enables them to donate more dollars to abortion-friendly politicians.

I find it morally wrong, but you have a good point on the financial incentives. If UAW promised management a lower birth rate for insured individuals, they might sign on.

A bunch of women in the rank and file threw this in on the demands for contract.
If this goes through, we leave the UAW. We cannot belong to an organization that procures this horrible demand. The UAW is in fact a joke. Several of our co-workers have dropped membership because of issues within it.

I'm glad they've got their priorities in order. So I wonder if keeping 6 Ford plants open is included, because Ford sure as hell doesn't need as many plants as they have now....

Outrageous!

I just love how the article quotes the "nonprofit Alan Guttmacher Institute" for its abortion facts without once mentioning that it is the research arm of Planned Parenthood.
But why mention it? Planned Parenthood is one of the good guys, fighting for women's freedom and the happiness of society. (The have to be. They're liberals.) Of course, the Heritage Foundation, the American Center for Law and Justice, and Fox News must be denounced at every turn as conservative partisans.
The only thing that makes this anything resembling palatable is the fact that no one can really deny the liberal leanings of the media anymore. It's obvious to everyone except those who are too far left to care.
