American soldier killed in Afghanistan

MacDill Air Force Base, Tampa, Florida-AP -- An American soldier has been killed in a hostile fire incident in Afghanistan.

The U-S Central Command only identifies the dead soldier as a member of special operations. The name is being withheld pending notification of the family.

Central Command reports the service member was injured while taking part in an operation yesterday in Paktika Province.

The soldier died as a result of the injuries.

I don't know too many details. He sent an e-mail as he was waiting for a plane to Germany, and only mentioned that he was having emergency surgery to clear his esophagus. No mention was made of what the problem was, but he seemed cognizant and was able to use e-mail, so I'm guessing it's not too serious.
