Let's be honest here: what we're discussing is posting the Commandments on government property, using taxpayer funded recourses as a forum for religion.

Let's be honest? I wish you would.

To have this farce going on under the guise of the first ammendment is an affont to anyone with a shred of honesty.

Let's go through some of the ammendments and see just how plain english can be twisted to mean anything.

1. Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.

Translation: The courts should strenuously stamp out all displays of religion on taxpayer property, and ensure that no one ever utters a religious word on public property. Freedom of speech shall only apply to pornographers, homosexuals, and America-hating liberals. Political speech must be strictly regulated. Any church that offers an unkind word about a democrat shall be shut down immediately.

2. A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.

Translation: You can keep your guns until we say otherwise.

5. The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.

Translation: Kick in all the doors you want boys, but make sure to wear ski masks when you are doing it and don't bother checking the address.

10. The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the states, are reserved to the states respectively, or to the people.

Translation: All power is vested in the courts. If the courts say day is night, everyone shall go home to bed. If the courts define marriage as only occurring between a hairless midget and 7 foot transsexual, so be it.

"That to compel a man to furnish contributions of money for the propagation of opinions which he disbelieves and abhors, is sinful and tyrannical;

That does it. If the government has athiesm as it's religion, I want my money back.

As evidenced by this thread, a growing number in the Republican party wants them gone too. Just one more example of how the Republican party is no longer the conservative party

Let me know when there's a sign at the court house saying "There is no God". I'll go protest with you.

That's easy. The DNC (I think it's latin for Dammit! No Christ!)

I mean, they hand out condoms in school, what's wrong with Bibles?

Reverse the question:

If they hand out Bibles, why not condoms? Both are the government intruding in your child's life well beyond the 3 R's. It's a two way street. Such matters are much better handled by family and the church.

I think that the citizens could get some air conditioning in a school or public building, and move the infirm their to stay for the duration of the heatwave, to save lives.

Or repent.

Don't touch a dollar bill, you might get religion.

Hmmmm. Hasn't worked yet, and I touch all the dollar bills I can get my hands on. Maybe I haven't touched enough of them yet. Anyone who wants to help me touch some more dollars, just send them to me. I'll keep you informed of the results.

"Just don't use public facilities to do it. Quite simple, really."

You forgot the part about never mentioning them or their Author (or His sovergnty, authority, omnipotence or omnipresence) at any time.

It should be outlawed - fines should be imposed - a minimum of a misdemeanor on the first offense.

Next.

Sheesh. If you can't read the Constitution, what makes you think you can read a dollar bill?
Ask someone to read it to you. That might help.

Atheism is a ferocious system, that leaves nothing above us to excite awe, nor around us to awaken tenderness. It's a void of the senses. A nothingness. A non-existance. A dark hole, where one man is his own God.

"Who want's them gone the most": Only those who don't want to follow the "commandments".

It's the same people who believe in abortion. And .. when confronted with a poster of the truth .. that an aborted fetus looks more like a BABY than a lump of tissue - they become violent and try to destroy the posters.

These types of people have been with us since Genesis.

But .. understand what's really going on here. The democrats/liberals are poised to LOSE POWER FOR 40-50 YEARS. After the 2002 election - when the dems did not regain any of their power, but only lost more of it - this amped up the attack against America's values.

W H Y ??

When you are about to lose power, what is the one thing you do at break-neck speed? .. you finish up all the stuff you wanted to get done - but were fooling around too much to bother with it at the time.

I believe this is why this stuff is being foisted upon us, seemingly all at once .. time is running out and the liberals are terrified.

If it's any consolation to you, I'm not a Republican.

I agree. Conservatism to me is defined by limited government and adherence to the Constitution. That's clearly no longer the Republican Party's objective.

Well, you would have to convince Judge Moore the "liberals" are on the retreat here . . namely the U.S.S.C. and the Alabama S.C.

Judge Moore is a Daniel in the Lion's Den.

And the Lion this time just happens to be the U.S. gubbermint.

Agreed. And adherence to the Constitution maintains that under the 10th Amendment this would be a state issue.

I agree. And at the state level, I still think its wrong for the majority of people to compel an unwilling minority to provide a forum for the promotion of religion.

Is it really all that hard to post the Commandments on your own property? I think not. I think the real reason proponents want Commandments at a court house is they want laws to be beholden to their own religion. They are trying to establish state religion by incrementalism.

Well, I think the counter argument would be that they are not on the same street at all, and that at one point in our history as a culture, that would have been obvious. To simply describe them as two types of "government intruding" is to reduce the specifics to meaningless generalities. Can a history teacher lean towards the Allies in covering WW2, or is that also too instrusive? Can we root for Neil Armstrong to successfully reach the moon, or is that too ideological?

The point is that ideology and culture are a huge part of education and everyone knows it. And many in the Christian community see the government as an agent of perversion and left wing ideology in every case, and against tradition in every case.

I am not saying that along settles it for me. I am just saying I understand the point. Now, as to the statue in the courthouse, I think it is a great opportunity for us all to debate and learn from the experience. Do I think it's appropriate to have the tablets there? Yeah, I think it makes sense. But in today's world, it's asking for grief. But it might be necessary.
