There's a new book about the assassination of Garfield. Garfield's VP, Chester Arthur, who succeeded him, was a member of the other wing of the Republican Party at the time. Garfield's assassin also belonged to that wing. The author said in a C-SPAN interview there is no evidence proving that any politicians of that wing were involved in an assassination plot, but the author obviously has suspicions along those lines.

Garfield's VP, Chester Arthur, who succeeded him, was a member of the other wing of the Republican Party at the time. Garfield's assassin also belonged to that wing. Charles Guiteau was his name, as I recall (from an old mountain ballad, of all things). He identified himself with the Stalwart wing of the GOP--in fact, he was explicit about his motives as he was subdued, crying out "I am the Stalwart of Stalwarts, and Arthur is president now!" Or something like that.
Sounds like a lone nut to me.
