George Herbert Walker Bush did, famously pledging that no matter how many times Congress came to him with a tax hike, he would say, "Read my lips, no new taxes." And then he raised taxes. So it's not a good sign when a politician isn't holding ticker-tape parades before the election showcasing his love of tax cuts.True that, true that. Now if Arnold would just list the programs he was going to cut and the amount he was going to cut from them, I would believe him.

Think Bob Riley - he pledged NOT to raise taxes in Alabama. Guess what happened after the election? I'm glad Arnold is NOT taking a no NEW taxes pledge. Nothing destroys public faith in a politician faster than finding out his convictions can be changed by new circumstances. I'd rather have Arnold be mercifully silent on the issue. There is no reason to lie when you don't have to. Ann's right - we should all cotton to run away as fast as our legs can carry us from ANY politician who makes a "binding" pledge to NEVER raise taxes. The Ten Commandment don't belong in politics.
