Bush and Dole lost because conservatives had hissy fits and stayed home rather than get out and vote. Reagan didn't win solely on conservative votes...he won with the Reagan Democrats. Reagan appealed to moderates and independents...that's how he won.
Unless and until California conservative GOPers GROW UP and support ALL party candidates, not just their blue-blood conservatives, they will continue to be the perennially irrelevant chihuahuas barking at the legs of the Rats who control the state.
McClintock has a snowball's chance in hell of winning and Bill Simon is even worse off. But noooo...let's all just stay home...that'll teach them to mess with us conservatives!!

Very well said.
What astounds me are the conservatives who say we should let Busttamante win to prove a point. Will they have to live here in CA and suffer through the increasing misery that is already blanketing the state?

My reply:
I strongly doubt that the facts bear this out. If one were to come up with the #1 "voting booth" reason for GHW Bush's loss, it would be the candidacy of Ross Perot. I would be hesitant to describe Mr. Perot's followers as "conservative."
For Dole, he campaigned as a strong conservative, emphasizing values in the White House. He lost, not because conservatives abandoned him, but the "middle-of-the-road" voter went strongly for Clinton. If you have to blame ONE voting-booth factor for Dole's loss, it would be that the casual voter felt "more comfortable" with the telegenic, who's-your-buddy Billy Clinton and voted for him.
