This alliance is good news. Rabbi Yehudah Levin (Union of Orthodox Rabbis of US and Canada) is a hardline domestic conservative who has in the past supported Pat Buchanan (y'sh"v). Rabbi Abraham Hecht of the RAA (labelled a "hate group" by "Hate Watch") is a hardline rightwing Orthodox Zionist who was banned from Israel for two years by the Labour government (he is also in favor of the release of Jonathan Pollard and long ago defended Jerry Falwell from charges of anti-Semitism).

HaShem grant that all factions of Torah-true Jewry will now unite on a wholistic Torah position on all issues whatsoever--Zionist, domestic, and international.

Born in Scotland, he was one of only six founding fathers to sign both the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. President George Washington appointed him a Justice on the Supreme Court. One of the most active members at the Constitutional Convention, he spoke 168 times. His name was James Wilson and he died this day, August 21, 1798. In addition to the two groups mentioned in the initial post, another Orthodox group (representing the Mitnaggedic or more rationalistic stream of Orthodoxy) has also supported Judge Moore. The article by Rabbi Moshe Ben-Chaim is available here.

I am not completely at ease with this group's hyper-rationalism, though they offer some balance to the more mystical streams of Judaism, some aspects of which also make me uncomfortable. More to the point, however, is that the author is compelled to defend Judge Moore from the charge of mixing religion and government on the grounds that the giving of `Aseret HaDevarim (the "ten commandments") is history rather than religion. I feel that such a defense is unnecessary because G-d's authority rather than the US Constitution is of primary importance. One need not make claims that the Constitution is being violated to defend government recognition of HaShem, since a Constitution that does forbid such a thing is no law at all. Ultimately even the American form of government must meet the standards and obligations set by the Creator. It is He who judges Washington and Jefferson, not vice versa.
