August 20, 2003 -- CONTROVERSIAL talk show host Michael Savage suddenly returned to New York radio last night, six weeks after he was canceled by WABC and fired by MSNBC.

The blustery ultra-conservative, who was canned by MSNBC for calling a viewer a "sodomite" who "should only get AIDS and die," stunned listeners and industry observers by making his comeback on the formerly subdued - but increasingly rowdy - WOR (710 AM).

This will definitely cut into WABC's listeners; I for one am glad Savage is back in town.

I can remember listening to WOR late night when I was a kid, back in the fifties, Listened to Long Jon Nebel, one of the earliest using the talk show format. He talked about UFOs, deros and teros, etc. Sort of an early Art Bell, I guess. WOR put in a fairly strong and fairly reliable signal to Savannah, Georgia back then. Guess 50,000 watts does kinda burn through the QRN.

I lived in southern Maine as a kid and I'd take my Silvertone radio under the covers with me at night to listen to Long John's show. Generally the nighttime reception was ok although sometimes I'd have to wrap the antenna wire around my hand to improve the pickup. It's a wonder I didn't end up electrocuted.

Wasn't Bob Grant on WOR?

He's quite the "little ray of sunshine" too! lol

Ditto: Monica at 6pm, then Savage at 8pm. My major daily stress point will be whether or not I leave Monica at 8, or join Savage at 9pm.

Nice to have an alternative to WABC........

Bob Grant has curbed his vitriol towards the callers, has outstanding guest interviews, and now SAVAGE!!

YYYYYYAAAAAAAYYYYYYYY

Does your post relate to the thread in any way, shape or form?

Glad to see Savage back on the air.

Anybody know what happened to Tom Maher (sp?), who used to be on at 7 on WOR, or Mark Levin, who used to be on at 7 on WABC?

Monica's too far out there for serious conversation. She uses lots of material from Batchelor & Alexander which is conspiratorial in the extreme.

They all sound like Art Bell wannabes at times.

PS, I find myself listening to Rush less and less, I get annoyed with his endless sports stuff, and my political intellect has matured over the years -- sometimes he has to catch up with me. What I do appreciate, however, is his analysis on the antics of the DC Pols, which I think he gets after being primed by his insider buddies in DC and elsewhere. PPS, I really like the Scarborough Country show, and look forward to seeing it.

Setting aside the matter of their styles, they are the two most literate of the talk show hosts out there. And Grant's knowledge of history is encyclopedic.

Anybody know what happened to...Mark Levin

I've been wondering myself. 'Dr. Levin' called Sean yesterday, so he's OK, but beyond that, I don't know.

I glad Savage is back in town if Mark isn't on, but I hope Mark at least gets his Sunday show back.

I wonder if his fooling with some of Seans less bright listeners who didn't know they were listening to tape delay didn't get him in too much trouble with the brass. ;-)
