Jeff Flake is on the Judiciary Committee, and he is second ranking majority member on the subcommittee of Immigration, Border Security and Claims. Jim Kolbe is fifth ranking member of the Appropriations Committee, and he's second ranking member on the Appropriations Subcommittee FUNDING the Judiciary. John McCain is one of the most powerful men in D.C. from his chair of the Senate Commerce Committee.
Tom Tancredo serves on the Budget Committee, he serves the International Relations Committee and it's Subcommitte on Africa, and he sits on the Resources committee and serves on the Subcommittee on Forests and Forest Health.
Which camp is better positioned in this scrum to get a high profile and personally invested measure through committee to a floor vote - Flake, Kolbe and McCain or the adversarial Tancredo?
It sounds like Tancredo is signalling sufficient defection from GOP malcontents to help a unanimous Democrat bloc defeat the measure. Just my speculation.
Yes Flake is on the Judiciary Committee, but so is Sensenbrenner, who is a staunch supporter of immigration reform, and he runs the committee. I would place my money on him and Tancredo to sway the votes against this, should it even make it there. I seriously doubt it will, the bill would be poison for the Republicans in the coming election with the base, exactly why I'm betting it goes nowhere.
You might want to take a look at Charlie Norwood's Clear Act, which would empower the police to enforce immigration laws. If anything passes, it's going to be that.
I don't have such connections, but I was lucky enough about a year ago to notice Tancredos's office (after an unavoidable and unfortunate meeting hosted by a Texas Dem down the hall). I ducked in and told Tancredo's young lady receptionist how much I appreciated her boss's good work. She just smiled and said thanks. I'm sure she gets that a lot.

I'm proud to see two of these Reps. are from Mo.
Colorado is lucky to have him, I wish he were a NY Rep. If immigration isn't brought under control, he's got an excellent chance of winning the presidency by 2008.
Does anyone recall voting for this Karl Rove guy?
I could count them on one hand. We can't even count on our Republican President to stand up for us against illegal immigration and the mess that comes with it.
Surely you're joking?! We don't want to rip the Republican party apart. We're on top now in the polls, but nothing is guaranteed for the 2004 election. We need to hang together! If we smash the Party into pieces, the Demopukes are waiting to party over the destruction.
Rational thinking has never been your strong suit. The Democrats would LOVE to see this 3-headed RINO sponsored Amnesty bill hit the floor for a vote. Unlike the self-deluded RINO contingent of the GOP that foolishly believes the Hispanic vote can be bought by pandering away our sovereignty and national wealth, the Democrats KNOW from experience that the unparalleled epic invasion from Mexico benefits them and their party hugely. Just look at whats happened in CA, NM, AZ and IL in recent years.
CA is a bankrupt bastion of socialism infested with Democrats. NM went for Gore and now has a Clinton Retread as Governor. AZ has a democratic governor that works hand and glove with Mexican Politicos to erase our borders. IL through massive illegal immigration is almost fully under the control of the democrats.
It seems that the GOP Open Border Nitwits will not rest until conservatism is dead and buried and the Democratic Party AGAIN regains its control across the board. Really, with Republicans like you there is no need for the Democratic Party.
Haven't you been reading Freerepublic lately? Pick any Bush post
All these Liberal spending sprees and social engineering by the so-called Conservatives that are in charge right now IS ripping the Republican party apart. Unfortunately our Esteemed leaders isolated in the "Beltway" in the party don't see it, A serious primary challange could hopefully let them know of our anger and remind them of why we elected them.
4000 votes for the Libertarian cost Jim Thune the election in South Dakota, I don't want to see a repeat of South Dakota except on a national level in 2004 but the way Bush and the Republicans are governering like FDR/LBJ liberals unfortunately it's starting to look like that is the way it's going to go.
BTW, Yes I understand we can't always get everything we want and sometimes we have to compromise and No I am not one of those one issue voters but come on now it would be nice if could at least get some or go in the direction towards Conservative/smaller government things out of this bunch.
Sorry to see this happen to your state and being that it borders mine it scares me. I guess that the only good news is that most of the illegals are up in Chicago.
Except for a few RINO governors, NY has been under the control of democrats for decades. Add millions of illegal aliens to the mix and it will be permanent, which is why I cannot understand how so many in the Republican party can be so blind to mass immigration and what it means for the future.
That used to be the case but the illegal alien population is now spreading out to many regions in northern IL. I'm 50 miles from Chicago and in the last two years the influx here has been staggering.
Americans that remain in denial about this crisis are going to have a rude awakening when it hits their town in the next few years.
Just did..... a little late, though. I see that the trolls are looming, too.
