Driver Accidentally Shoots Self, Dies
POSTED: 12:42 p.m. MDT August 19, 2003
CLOVIS, N.M. -- Police said a Clovis man bled to death after accidentally shooting himself in an apparent attempt to ward off potential attackers.
Authorities said Daniel Stockton, 52, was in his pickup truck with his wife when a car sideswiped his vehicle in Clovis Sunday. Police said Stockton followed the car until it stopped. Officers said the car's driver and two male passengers appeared to be getting out to come toward his truck.
Stockton's wife told police her husband retrieved his pistol from the center console, cocked the gun, and it fired. The gunshot severed an artery in his leg, and he tried to drive to a hospital, but only made it a few blocks.

"...was in his pickup truck with his wife..." And therein lies the problem. Any right thinking individual knows your dog belongs in the cab and your wife in back.

"Went off half-cocked," so to speak. This would NEVER have happened to the Slickster. He was always fully cocked. And Monica can testify to that.

Rule #2: Never allow the muzzle to cover anything you are not willing to destroy.Oh, my hubby definitely was being safe the day he pointed his .45 Ruger down at the love seat while unloading it so he could clean it...he shot the back leg off of the loveseat, LOL!

Indeed- and if that is the case I thank him for removing himself...this vigilante attitude must change. We just had an incident where a teenager had his car bumped, he went racing after the culprits - ran a red and killed three kids coming home from church. Over a minor fender bender!

Double Darwin, for following the car, stopping and then for shooting himself. Following the car would have been considered inappropriate for an armed person anyway. Looks like he was looking for a fight.
Triple Darwin. If he had applied pressure to his leg by using his pants leg as a tourniquet instead of driving himself to the hospital, he probably would have lived.

"Figuring out who fired the weapon and
from what angle it was fired is quite easy." Maybe her story will change to: "I was trying to stop him..."?

"I wonder if there is any reason that his wife didn't drive. "
I'm guessing there a few female freepers who can well imagine this woman's state of mind as Road Rage Hubby Roared on and on. To his untimely demise. (Of course, these are non-Freeper hubbys, as is my own.) Who knew, we were young and foolish!
Don't forget, she had to be listening to whatever he was probably screaming at the top of his lungs as his was driving, drawing, and shooting, and driving, bleeding, and dying.
He's 52, he probably has already passed his genes into the pool, and if so, I assert he is ineligible for a Darwin award, but then again, him being a man, maybe a second place award.
