Reagan was not a Reagan Republican when he was elected governor of California.
He raised taxes and signed a bill legalizing abortion.
And Reagan would not have hired Lyn Nofziger when he was running for governor. He would likley have cost him the election.

He differs with Reagan on such issues as abortion - he is pro-choice and in favor of homosexual adoption and gun control. Where he agrees with Reagan is not clear. His party links are to such liberal Republicans as former Los Angeles Mayor Richard Riordin and former Gov. Pete Wilson.
To: Cathryn Crawford
Of course he's no Ronald Reagan. After he details his policy positions on Wednesday, we'll see if there's still a place for conservatives in his campaign.

Scuse me, but wasn't Nofziger Reagan's press secretary when Reagan ran for governor? From this bio.......
Franklin (Lyn) Nofziger, who heads Nofziger Communications, a consulting and government relations firm, is best known for his work with Ronald Reagan, from the former Presidents days as Governor of California to his presidential campaigns and the Reagan White House.
After serving in the U.S. Army and earning his bachelor of arts degree in journalism from San Jose State College, Mr. Nofziger spent 16 years as a reporter, editor and Washington correspondent for Copley Newspapers and Copley News Service.
In 1966, he was named press secretary for Ronald Reagans gubernatorial campaign, followed by two years as Governor Reagans director of communications. Mr. Nofziger then served the Nixon White House as deputy assistant to the president for congressional relations and the Republican National Committee as its deputy chairman for communications.

So, Nofziger worked for Reagan when he wasn't a Reagan Republican.
How does he defend Reagan's signing a tax increase and a bill legalizing abortion (this was before Roe v. Wade)?

Reagan's signing a tax increase and a bill legalizing abortionGuys, Pres. Reagan wasn't that great a supporter of pro-life issues. I believe Nancy took the lead on being pro-choice, as well. Could be wrong, just my impression, and not making any value judgements on RR or Arnold, either.

Remember the Happy Days episode where Fonzie can't say the word
wrong?
"I was wr-r-r . . . I was wr-r-r-rah . . ."
I'm gonna start calling you Fonzie.

Sadly, there will never be another dashingly charming and savvy a politican as Reagan. One thing I can say that Arnold and Ronald have in common is resolute determination against all odds and independence from the labels that people wish to assign them.

I was WRONG on Nofziger.
But, he's wrong on Schwarzenegger. Arnold's not proclaiming he's a Reagan.
Ronald Reagan couldn't be elected governor of California today.

Ronald Reagan couldn't be elected governor of California today. That's heartbreakingly true.

When Reagan ran against Gerald Ford for the '76 PUB nomination, I had not yet registered to vote. Listened to Reagan, and liked what he had to say, made a promise that if he got the Pub nomination, I would then register to vote. He didn't get it and I didn't vote. However, when he got the 1980 nomination, I registered to vote for the first time in my life. Since Reagan there has been only one other person that has motivated me and made me feel proud to be an American. That person is George W. Bush.

From Lyn Nofzigers biography on file at the the John Ashbrook Center for Public Affairs Think Tank.
In 1966, he ( Nofziger )was named press secretary for
Ronald Reagans gubernatorial campaign,
followed by two years as Governor Reagans director of
communications. Mr. Nofziger then served the Nixon
White House as deputy assistant to the president for
congressional relations and the Republican National
Committee as its deputy chairman for communications.
The two most important people in every Reagan campaign from govenor to president were Ed Meese and Lyn Nofziger.

The two most important people in every Reagan campaign from govenor to president were Ed Meese and Lyn Nofziger. I'm surprised that Nofziger is jumping offside to head off any comparison of Schwarzenegger to Reagan, when Arnold hasn't made the comparison, and nobody else is making the comparison.
Of course Arnold is no Reagan, but Reagan was not the same man in 1980 that he was in 1966.

Where he agrees with Reagan is not clear.Arnold is a self professed social liberal. Arnold says he's a fiscal conservative, yet so far, Arnold has presented no evidence that he even knows what a political conservative is. Arnold is to the left of well known RINO's like Susan Collin's, Lincoln Chaffey and Arlen Spector.
Arnold says he wants to get California out of the red, so its social welfare programs can run more effectively and efficently for the people. That sounds like high minded liberalism, not conservatism. Arnold also wants to bring businesses back to California, so tax revenues will increase and social welfare programs can be properly funded. More high minded liberalism.

LOL, I'd forgotten that one. I've known a few people who can't say 'I'm sorry', at least not as an apology. No one here, of course, but you just made me think of them, I'll try and see this flaw as comical from now on.
Maybe it will help me not want to strangle them! : )

Ronald Reagan couldn't be elected governor of California today. Yes, he could.
Because he was an excellent candidate, and had the right ideas.
