Gov. Gray Davis, campaigning to keep his term from coming to a premature end in the recall election, endorsed a fledgling Democratic proposal last week to dump the planned increase in the car tax in favor of higher taxes on the wealthy and cigarettes.
The swap could help Davis, eliminating a much-despised tax increase that will add an average $160 to the annual fee just a week before the recall election.
But will the unorthodox plan work?

Nope!
That way they could repeatedly raise taxes without a 2/3rds vote in the legislature.

Ditto...
There is nothing to stop them from substituting a tax that will sunset, with a new one (over and over and over)...

It will be a state of A. Huffingtons. Pays no taxes.
Oh horse sh*t. What you think big government and socialism and out of control immigration are somehow isolated to Cal? Do you suggest they all move to conservative Texas?

Middle Easterners streaming to Texas
Texas has one of the nation's fastest-growing Middle Eastern populations, and most of the state's immigrants live in Houston, according to a study based on census data.
Researchers at the Center for Immigration Studies say Texas' Middle Eastern population more than doubled in the last decade, to just over 100,000, including more than 52,000 in Greater Houston.
As the Californians march the most liberal leftist governor in the nation to the political gallows, I would say things seem to be turning around in a very big way. So I am sure a lot of them would say, F**K You.
About 49 other states are trying to complete with Cal and are operating in the red, and they too being inundated by illegal aliens from Georgia, to Tennesses, to Colorado, to Texas, Utah, etc, etc, etc.
So don't feel left out, you aint no lone ranger, as it seems you are getting what you deserve too.
I think WestPacSailior's frustration is with the shear size of the problem in California. Nearly 15 million, yes that's 15 MILLION, of California's residents are a consequence of illegal immigration. That's greater than the total population of some of the states you correctly listed.
Huh? LOL! Not quite. In any event, someone ought to tell Bush to get off his butt and do something about our national, *federal borders*. That is the bottom line, end of story.
