Greg Spurlock has an interesting take on the old saying "When life hands you lemons, make lemonade."
When life handed Spurlock a wise-cracking Republican spoofing on his short-in-the-front, long-in-the-back haircut at the Fancy Farm picnic, he made a Web site.
And a clever, insightful one at that.
The site, www.mulletsforchandler.com, is Spurlock's answer to the young Ernie Fletcher supporter who waved a "Mullets for Chandler" sign above Spurlock's head during the political speeches at the Western Kentucky picnic two weeks ago. Spurlock is a staunch Democrat and a supporter of Fletcher's Democratic opponent in the governor's race, Ben Chandler. He also sports the mullet haircut, which some people describe as "business in the front, party in the back."
A funny guy, Spurlock shows he has a sharp wit that can party with the best of them. But he also proves that up-front, he's all business.
The Web site includes plenty of self-deprecating humor. It also lays out Spurlock's biting commentary against Republicans, who he derides as exclusive blue-bloods out of touch with real folk.
"My name is Greg, and I have a mullet," starts a personal message from Spurlock on the homepage of mulletsforchandler.com. "I may not be part of a country club, drive a Jaguar or drink martinis, but I vote. And when the lever is drawn in Kentucky on November 4 in the governor's race, it will be for Ben Chandler."
The home page bears the banner "Mullets for Chandler" and the motto "Hair should flow like the flag." Spurlock claims Chandler's only flaw is the length -- or lack thereof -- of his hair. He's posted mullet jokes, mullet notes and a mullet haiku.
But Spurlock also lets the world know there's a brain under that mullet of his. He shares his take on what are the most important issues in the state: bringing jobs back to the state, maintaining funding for education, providing seniors with affordable prescription drugs and sustaining the economy.
On a personal note, Spurlock lauds the federal program Head Start, which provides free or affordable pre-school education for underprivileged children. Head Start, he said, helped his 9-year-old son succeed in school and could do the same for other kids.
"Any program cuts are likely to hurt the disabled children and thus hurt the kids that need it the most," he writes. "I will not walk away and ignore how our educational system has helped my son.''
Spurlock thinks Chandler is the candidate who will make education better for Kentucky. Republicans, he says, aren't interested in the mullet vote.
Spurlock couldn't be reached for an interview to explain exactly why he established the Web site. But he makes it quite clear in the section titled "Why this site."
"It seems that Republicans are happy to have the Mullet vote as long as the curtain is drawn and they don't have to see you. They will never turn down a donation, but worry little about you showing up at $500-a-plate fund-raisers," he writes. "On the contrary, Democrats see diverse people as a vital part of the fabric that makes our country so great. As the party of real family values, it is only Democrats that value the place of workers and citizens in our communities.''
Chandler's campaign manager said he's seen the Web site and finds it funny. "We are all about fun," said Mark Nickolas. "Coming out of the primary, Ben was determined to have some fun in the general as we talk about these very important issues, and we have tried to do that."
Whether that fun will extend to Chandler growing his own mullet, as Spurlock is championing, that's another story, Nickolas said.
"In this field, you never say 'never,'" he said. "But I'm not sure that Jennifer Chandler (Ben's wife) would be a strong supporter."
Bet it was the Speedo....
LOLOL.... Not Likely.
