I was not making light of another country's culture. If that other country's culture includes cannibalism I suppose that is perfectly acceptable to some people...I can't imagine who but perhaps there are some.

"You clearly have no respect for anything but that in which you seem to practice." Well, yes, actually I do have lots of respect for that which I don't practice. Cannibalism does not happen to be a cultural practice for which I have respect. It's loathesome to eat other people don't you think?

"To you is the cannibalism they practice in the Congo really any worse than the slavery the U.S. practiced not so long ago." Well quite some time ago actually. And, yes, cannibalism is far worse that the practice of slavery. I, personally, would much rather be a slave than be eaten alive. I wonder why you keep bringing up slavery in the U.S. Slavery is still being practiced right now in some countries. The U.S. had the moral clarity to realize that slavery was a terrible thing and to eliminate it. Unfortunately, slavery has been practiced all through human history and it is not only black people who have been slaves. Or perhaps you are not aware of that.

"You only expose yourself as a bigot when you do that." Oh, so now I'm a "bigot." Well my daughter and granddaughter are "African-American" and I'm a bigot. Okay. I'm just thankful to God that my ex-husband's people were brought here as slaves so that my daughter and granddaughter could be born here and not on that continent (Africa) which should be so very full of promise but which seems destined, despite all of its fantastic resources, to be plagued by horror.

Lots of bullshit and cultural relativity on this thread. Slavery is not nor ever was comparable to cannibalism which has historically been eschewed by more advanced societies for far longer thn slavery has been.

I lived in Africa....Sierra Leone to be exact...and Haiti which is sort of an African microcosm in our midst.

The road to recovery for those places (maybe it's not really recovery but catch-up) is long if not impossible. That does not mean that one should not hope or lend a hand in hopeless situations but the reality is that many many folks in Africa are going to die in the next 50 years from disease, war, and famine and there is little we can do to change that short of re-colonization and I'm not even sure that would work.

All cultures are not equal nor on level playing fields and these Pollyanna fools running around espousing such platitudes either have no real world experience or simply cannot swallow when reality crushes their self serving idealism.
