The insight here and in the article is that it was the Brits who knew of the WMD potential on the battlefield, not the Americans. The whole piece is written to place the BRit intelligence and subversion of the Iraqui military in the history books. The war on Iraq was won in advance by the Brits.
This will be a wonderful battle between Yanks and Brits once it is able to come to the light. Who did the most to kill Saddam before the war.....the Yanks or the Limeys?
Dr David Kay, the American weapons expert who heads the 1,400-strong Iraq Survey Team that is conducting an extensive search for Saddam's biological, chemical and nuclear programmes in Iraq, made the startling revelation that the Iraqi dictator had ordered his commanders to fire chemical shells at invading coalition troops during the recent conflict.
Startling only to a point. I seem to recall gas masks and atropine found hither and yon as our troops advanced through Iraq, indicating the intention to use these types of weapons against us.
And then there's this sad point. In the rush to call Bush and Blair liars (I just turned MSNBC on in time to see Keith Olberman still on this path):
And if Dr Kay's recent predictions about uncovering the secrets of Saddam's various weapons of mass destruction programmes prove to be correct, then the painstaking investigation currently being undertaken by Lord Hutton into whether the British Government exaggerated the threat posed by Saddam would be rendered irrelevant.
Sad. Kelly knew Saddam had the stuff, but as he told Watts "there's more than one interpretation" one could put on things. So typical of the left. Before the war EVERYBODY agreed Saddam had the stuff. The disagreement was over what, if anything, to do about it. It wasn't just Kelly. Even France agreed Iraq was in violation of the UN agreement.
