You need to show ID's to cash a check. You need you insurance card to get medical treatment. You need ID's for nearly everything. Try to do just normal day to day business without an ID and you won't get far. Is it a good thing? Probably. I'd be really upset if people were cashing my checks or charginh my HMO etc....

If the control freaks have their way, you won't be able to buy or sell without presenting the proper ID. And the sheeple will eat it under the guise of "protecting their safety".

As for identify theft, I have a better solution than turning America into a bueracratic police state.

Pass a law to execute those guilty of identify theft upon conviction by a fair and speedy trial supervised by a jury of their peers.

Then take the criminals out and hang them from the tallest tree in town. Leave them up for a few days, so the next 'identify thief' is deterred.

Problem solved.

The "SYSTEM" isn't going to allow this boy to prevail no matter how many lawsuits he files. Showing the IDs arguments have pros and cons of course but ultimately doesn't it seems like the slow tightening of the screws on the citizenry is never going to stop?

Anyway as far as air travel is concerned one would think that organized groups of murderers will come up with fake IDs that are able to pass muster. BTW, do you recall the Arab who rolled his car in Indiana last year who was carrying at least four sets of driver's licenses and Satanic Slave---errr, Social Security cards? There was an FR thread but it was not nationally reported {of course}.

Is it a good thing?

Try this: Imagine a world with anonymous stored value - undetectable currency in any amount that cannot be traced. Imagine a world with only consumption taxes, collected at point of sales without recording the identity of the purchaser.

Would you be more free? Or do you not care about those kinds of freedom?

Hey Dutch I finally found the following:

Plainfield, Indiana arab killed in crash, has three IDs and four checkbooks with different names. WIBC-AM radio, AP ^ | May 7, 2002 | AP Posted on 05/07/2002 7:02 AM PDT by caddie By the Associated Press [WIBC News] - The Indiana State Police are investigating why a man killed in a car crash was carrying three identifications and four checkbooks with different names. Police initially thought there were two occupants in the car that crashed late Sunday, killing Q. Naim Abdullah, 24, of Plainfield. State police troopers and volunteer firefighters searched the high weeds and mud at the scene of the crash on Interstate 65 in southern Bartholomew County, but no one else was found. Abdulla was traveling northbound at a high rate of speed, swerved to miss a tractor trailer and lost control, striking the median and rolling the vehicle several times, police said. He was not wearing a seat belt. The FBI assisted in determining the correct identification of the driver and notifying the family. Gee, most days I don't even carry any ID. Typically, the only time I need it is when I leave the country or book a plane flight out of the country. Otherwise, well, I use public transport to get around and pay cash for just about everything.
