Woman slams car into police headquarters
SCOTT FROST , Staff Writer 08/16/2003
Trenton police charged a city woman with driving while intoxicated yesterday afternoon after slamming her car into police headquarters.
Nelaja Hawkins, 32, of the 300 block of Clearfield Avenue, was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol and various other motor vehicle summonses after she crashed her 1991 Buick into the North Clinton Avenue side of Trenton Police headquarters.
Police said Hawkins was traveling east on Perry Street at 2:55 p.m., and was approaching North Clinton Avenue when she allegedly went around the vehicle in front of her, ran the red light and turned left in front of the police station.
She then made a sharp left, pressed down on the gas, jumped the curb and smashed into the stations communication bureau on North Clinton Avenue, police said.
Police said the crash damaged a five-foot section of the brick wall, but no one was seriously injured.
Police said crews came in to clean up the mess after Hawkins was found to be intoxicated behind the wheel of her car.
Hawkins passenger, Theresa Flounoy, 38, of the 900 block of Perry Street, was pulled from the car, before being transported to Capital Health System at Fuld where she was treated for a severe laceration to her forehead and released.

Police said crews came in to clean up the mess after Hawkins was found to be intoxicated behind the wheel of her car. If she were sober, she would be dead.
To: DeFault User
did they clean up the mess from her crash or because she was intoxicated behind the wheel?
This article seems like it was written by an 8th grade inner-city youth.

This article seems like it was written by an 8th grade inner-city youth. Well, I suppose there is some consolation in that the somewhat distorted syntax is the result of ignorance and not the deliberate effort to distort one finds in the more "elite" media.
