Schwarzenegger's Co-chairman Backs Driver's Licenses for Illegal Aliens Buffett Thinks Taxes Are Low

The co-chairman of Arnold Schwarzenegger's campaign for governor has supported efforts to give driver's licenses to illegal aliens, according to state records, a political position that may clash with the candidate's views.
Assemblyman Abel Maldonado, R-Santa Maria, voted to approve two bills in the last two legislative sessions that would have removed legal residency requirements for license applicants. Gov. Gray Davis, citing concerns about public safety, vetoed both bills.
This year, a third, virtually identical bill has won approval in the state Senate, and is expected to be approved by the Assembly before the summer session ends Sept. 12.
Davis has recently announced he would sign the bill.
Maldonado's voting record could conflict with Schwarzenegger's apparent stance on immigration policy. Schwarzenegger's campaign director, former Gov. Pete Wilson, confirmed the candidate had voted in favor of Proposition 187, which would have cut off illegal aliens from all public services and programs.
Proposition 187, approved by more than 60 percent of voters, was later blocked by court decisions and did not go into effect.
Schwarzenegger's exact position on immigration issues is not clear. A campaign spokeswoman said positions on a variety of topics would be made public over the next few weeks, and refused to even confirm whether or not Maldonado was on board.
A Maldonado aide seemed surprised that Schwarzenegger's campaign would not discuss the assemblyman's involvement.
Buffett: Property Taxes Too Low in California
Meanwhile, the Wall Street Journal reported Friday that Warren Buffett, the Democrat billionaire advising Schwarzenegger's campaign, suggested in an interview that the state's property taxes needed to be higher.
Buffett blamed California's popular Proposition 13, which has limited property taxes since 1978.
He noted the difference between his own property-tax bills. His $500,000 house in Omaha has a tax bill of $14,401. His $4 million house in Laguna Beach has a tax bill of $2,264. The taxes on his Omaha home rose $1,920 this year, compared with $23 on the Laguna Beach home, he said.
"Mr. Buffett stopped short of saying he would urge Mr. Schwarzenegger to seek a reversal of Proposition 13 to increase property taxes - a move that would almost certainly be attacked by many of Mr. Schwarzenegger's fellow Republicans. But he left little doubt that that is where he is leaning," the Journal reported.
"This property-tax illustration, that tells you, you can draw certain conclusions from that," Buffett said. "In effect, it makes no sense."
He apparently forgot to mention California's heavy burden of other taxes, such as the personal income tax, gasoline tax and car tax.

Another view from a weak out-a-stator, with an envious eye, standing on the sidelines waving his arms for attention. Slow down man.
Lets hear what Schwarzenegger has to say before we roll him.

A little sunlight on the issue of policy.....should be enough incentive to keep the REAL Republicans going for the brass ring....

Hmmm... my house, also in Orange County, has a tax apraisal value of 189000 and I pay more than $2,264 property taxes per year.
Something is wrong with this picture.

It's a well known medical fact that Steroid abuse causes one's Gonads to shrivel up.
No Gonads = No Convictions.
Apparently Arnie has no beliefs he's willing to stand up and fight for. Just another political chameleon.
Move along... next candidate please.

Most likely, he has owned his $4 million house since the 1970s.
It was probably a $150,000 house when he bought it.
Waterfront property has increased exponentially in value in California, especially in Orange County. (The government of Orange County is almost sane compared to the rest of the state).
