many prescription drugs are based on the ingredients in heroin, cocaine and other illegal drugs, but drugs derived from those substances are controlled by doctors and have shown true medical benefits after decades of research Big Pharma loves those high FDA hurdles---they push small competitors and nonpatentable medicines like marijuana right out of the market.

It ought to be considered beneath the dignity of government to concern itself with common vegetation.
Unfortunately, nothing appears to be beneath the dignity of the socialist(of whatever hue) claque who now cling to office like piglets to a sow.
No one ought to consider themselves accountable to these lawyerly cannibals.

Pots Pain Reliving Qualities
The available evidence from animal and human studies indicates that cannabinoids can have a substantial analgesic [pain relieving] effect. One exception is the lack of analgesic effect in studies on experimentally induced acute pain, but because of limitations in the design of those studies they were inconclusive.
Further clinical work is warranted to establish the magnitude of the effect in different clinical conditions and to determine whether the effect is sustained. Although the usefulness of cannabinoids appears to be limited by side effects, notably sedation, other effects such as anxiolysis, appetite stimulation, and perhaps antinausea and antispasticity effects should be studied in randomized, controlled clinical trials.
These very special effects might warrant development of cannabinoid drugs for particular clinical populations.

Drug czar John Walters said Thursday that medical marijuana is being used as a political ploy to support efforts to legalize marijuana in a state where it already poses the most serious drug abuse problem for teenagers. Somebody tell me why I should believe anything that comes out of this guy's pie-hole?

Oh don't be so sensitive.
A lot of my friends are Phish fans, I'm not, but I will say their version of the National Anthem at an NBA playoff game was the classiest, most dignified, and most patriotic renndition that I've seen/heard in years and years.
My faves?....The Ramones and Johnny Cash.

Walters said about 25 percent of teens in the metro area who report drug abuse problems say they are dependent on marijuana, compared with 15 percent who report alcohol abuse. Lie #1.

But marijuana remains the single biggest abuse problem in the nation, especially for teens and young adults, Walters said. Lie #2.

"So people with severe pain should just take it for the War On Some Drugs?"No, people who want "medical marijuana" only need to tell their doctor they have severe pain.
According to the GAO report, most do.

people who want "medical marijuana" only need to tell their doctor they have severe pain.Is that not also true for any painkiller? Should we therefore ban all painkillers?

I found this part of the article very interesting
how come 25 percent of the kids, get MJ, and only 15percent get booze
could it be booze is regulated and MJ is not
As far as the Med MJ being a scam, tell that to someone who can't keep med's down because they puke it Up
You anti- Med MJ people make me want to puke
until you have seen a loved one go through trying to keep anything down from cancer drugs,
shut the Hell up
If it works for someone with cancer or Aids, why should they be denied access to it.

According to research cited by the Institute of Medicine, of all those who have ever used alcohol 15% of them became dependent; for marijuana the corresponding figure is a substantially lower 9%.

That's some logic. Can you imagine?
"Hey, Doc, I got this infection."
"Aw, you're just saying that to get some antibiotics".
Duh.

Gee, 4,500 people using medical marijuana. Sounds like just about everybody in the state rushed in to become addicted to pot. That is one of the problems with this isn't it, EVERYBODY will get hooked on pot?

Oh don't be so sensitive. You're right. For whatever reason, I got the impression that you were a crotchety old person who was into Yanni or Michael Bolton or something. Sorry.

It was a good version. Unfortunately, the rest of that night sucked as I am a Nets fan.

THC and all other derivatives are available in tablet and liquid form by prescription. Except that derivatives such as Marinol are *so* strong that it literally leaves you unable to carry on a conversation. The advantage of smoking marijuana is that you can control the dosage.
