August 15, 2003 -- Officials were still puzzling last night over the cause of the yesterday's massive blackout that stretched from Ottawa to New Jersey and from Cleveland to Long Island.

Canadian officials said the outage was caused when lightning struck a power generating plant on the U.S. side of Niagara Falls, but officials on this side of the border quickly disputed the claim.

"Under the cover of a rain storm"

Except that a high pressure system was centered near that location yesterday, so it should have been clear skies.

I agree that anything is within the realm of possibility, though.

Canada as a likely cause.

All kidding aside, Chretien was desparately trying to fling blame at Pennsylvania, Mohawk NY, and God.

Can't help but wonder if the socialist paradise that is Canada could be the real culprit.

Otherwise, what made the software fail?

Maybe the recent worm? Since we're all guessing, I’d guess it was the Y2K bug, or the bug-fix that was never tested in operation, and failed yesterday.

I went through "computer withdrawal".

Just got an e-mail from Buffalo … my cousin is on line thanks to his Y2K generator. He has enough gasoline for about another day … several days if he conserves …. even longer if he siphons fuel from his cars. He is helping store frozen food for those of his neighbors who did not maliciously sneer at his Y2K preparations.

The people got what they deserve for demanding the moon and refusing to create a system to meet their own selfish demands.

It’s too bad that the problem could not be isolated to only those selfish environmentalists. Maybe now, they will lose their stranglehold on the state legislatures, allowing new power plants to be built.

Your post is better than all the mainstream media reportage. But I still have trouble wrapping my head around it.

It would be nice to have something visual, with diagrams.

Mayor Bloomberg blamed a lightning strike in Quebec. "

No, he blamed a white male with a Marlboro.

Didn't that Canadian PM, Jean CHRETAN say that a bolt of lightening hit the place?

NOW, they say it might have started in OHIO ??

Talk about missing it big time...you KNOW it was an RPG now...
