Eves declares state of emergency

Ontario Premier Ernie Eves has declared a state of emergency for the entire province and is telling all non-essential and non-emergency workers to stay home on Friday.

The decision was announced just as power was restored to a large part of downtown Toronto, including the banking district and the CBC Broadcast Centre.

Eves says he's not sure when power will be restored, but he doesn't appear to be taking any chances.

Power is coming back slowly in some parts of the province, but the major centres, Toronto, Ottawa and London, Ont., are still dealing with widespread blackouts.

At its height the blackout spread from Windsor in the west to Ottawa in the east. In the north, power is out in Sudbury, Timmins, and as far north as Hearst and Temiskaming and the town of Moosonee on the coast of James Bay.

The state of emergency means most workers will be asked to stay home.

It also means early reports that power might be restored quickly, may have been wildly optimistic. The agency responsible for Ontario's electricity supply says it can't promise when the power will be back on - it could be days.

Bruce Campbell, of Ontario's Independent Electricity Market Operators, said "... it may take a couple of days to get all of the generation reconnected ot the system and in that period its very important people take what steps they can to limit their power use so that we can get everyone back on as soon as possible."

Why close everything down? My business would still continue with or without power. These Socialist Canadians are looking for a good excuse to stay home. Imagine If the Y2K scare happened for real? The End of Western Civilization as we know it.

"Preliminary causes of the outage could have been caused by a squirrel, lightning, or terrorism."

What about lightning-fast terrorist squirrels?

Judging by the coloration, that is one of those dark-gray to black anarchist squirrels. Are they more dangerous than the red squirrels?
