CA: GOP Moderates Back the Big Guy ("The New Majority")
LA Times ^ | 8/14/03 | Jean O. Pasco

It was 6 p.m. when the call arrived, an hour after actor Arnold Schwarzenegger had stunned California's political establishment by announcing on "The Tonight Show" that he would run to replace Gov. Gray Davis in the Oct. 7 recall election.

Schwarzenegger was on the line, calling potential supporters at the New Majority, the Orange County-based group of more than 100 wealthy, moderate Republicans who'd backed Richard Riordan for governor last year and encouraged the actor to take a stab at public office.

Schwarzenegger, the star attraction at a New Majority gala last year, arranged for a speaker phone to be sent into the private room at the Pacific Club in Newport Beach. There, New Majority board members were meeting with Gerry Parsky, the attorney who is President Bush's political point man in California.

"There was this feeling of joy and excitement."

Finally! I wish Simon and McClintock well, but the Republican party in California is past dead and they have been unable to revive it. There is finally a spark and I thank Arnold for it.

That swine Parsky was against our recall!!!!

Probably too worried Issa or McClintock would win it. Now that a liberal with an 'R' can get his agenda through, he's "partying" for a candidate.

My questioning on whether to jump on the Ahrnold Buffet bandwagon is officially over with Parsky's flip flop.

Hey Norm...

Yet another example of our friends, the middle-of-the-road crowd, taking the bull-by-the-horns, sticking-their-fingers-in-the-wind, and finally deciding on someone whose position they do not know, cannot understand, and believe in without question...

Geeeezzz, are principles (such as knowing at least something about the person you will vote for) gone around here? Me thinks answer is yes!!!

You can't reform anything if you don't win.

Worse, you can fail and take all the blame.

You mean if we lose, we...LOSE???...(...sitting down...taking a deep breath...)...

Thank you for that insight on DAY 5 of a two-month long campaign.

Question for the audience: Do you know if Arnold can answer a tough (non-scripted) question?

Just wondering...

Are you saying then we should borrow a liberal campaign tactic ? Campaign as one thing, do something else when elected? So much for honesty...

I eat "Moderates" for lunch and I'm for Arnold. He's a win-win.

He will kick the asses and scare the crap out of the lazy, corrupt, Marxist, hispano-terrorists pretending to be state legislators (the best part).

He'll rally and motivate the depressed, discouraged anglo voter.

If he succeeds, Republicans get the credit and win future elections.

If he fails, the Screen Actors Guild and moderates get the blame.

Conservatives cannot lose with Arnold.

Conservatives can only lose with either Simon or McClintock. Unfortunately.

Parsky was against the recall for strategic reasons, not political ones. Before Arnie jumped in, it was doubtful the recall could succeed which would just make Davis and his machine more powerful.

I think the real hero in this is Issa. It really took courage to do what he did and it really took character to withdraw. The guy's a giant.

I totally agree about Issa. Those making fun of his tears need to understand the person sacrafice he has made.

Before Arnie jumped in, it was doubtful the recall could succeed which would just make Davis and his machine more powerful.

Now I totally take issue with this however. The beauty of this is that right now, August 13 2003. Every single one of us who is going to polls to vote out Davis could DROP DEAD and Davis win in a landslide of 100% 'no' and he still isn't stronger from this. This is SOOOO ugly for him and the Party of the Donkey. That's why I was getting into knock down drag out fights on here since March. It never hurt to try.

Except now, I never thought we would have only one choice in it, annointed by the media, that we are forced to "rally behind" who was going to have an 'R' yet conversely be completely incapable of rectifying the fiscal crisis we have in the form of Ahrnold Buffet.

You're right, you've got to win first and make the changes second. The fact is that the Neo-Cons have a better chance of winning in California than the social conservatives because the Neo-Cons are basicly disaffected liberals who have fled the Democratic Socialists for the cover of the Republican party because they found that they have more in common with the fiscal premises of the Republicans. Once in office though, their hero is going to need to build a coalition with either the Democrats or the Republicans to retain power. Since the Democrat fiscal model has been a proven failure in California, that should bode well for the social conservatives. I hope it turns out that way and not like the Senate Neo-Cons or RINOs.
