The Republicans blew it at every step of the way. They made mistake after mistake after mistake.
-- Willie Brown, January 1995
Im sure people remember the election of 1994. That was the year the Republicans took back the House of Representatives. Republicans won all over the nation in 1994 and California was no exception. Republicans took control of the State Assembly in California with a 41 to 39 advantage. Nationally, the Republicans have not lost their advantage since the 1994 election. But in California it took less than two months for Republican control to evaporate. And the California Democrat party hasnt looked back.
In 1994 Willie Brown had been Californias Assembly speaker for 14 years and, with the 41 to 39 Republican advantage, it was time to end Browns rule and establish Jim Brulte as the Assembly speaker. But unbelievably, Brown and the Democrats orchestrated a series of events that led to Brown being elected speaker yet again.
A 41 to 39 advantage became a 40 to 39 loss. The Republicans never recovered.
Now return to the present and we can see history may be repeating itself. An assured Democrat loss and Republican victory could become a Democratic win if the Republicans fragment like they did in 1994. California Democrats have outfoxed the Repubs over and over and it could be happening again. The Dems cant do it without help from, or the haplessness, of California Republicans, as Willie Brown pointed out in the quote that starts this piece.
This time around the Republicans are making mistake after mistake by running three candidates in the recall election for Governor while the Dems are running only one, Cruz Bustamante, the current Lt. Governor.
Running only one candidate assures the Dems of maximizing the vote of their hardcore constituency. Bustamante will get anywhere from 30% to near 50% of the vote, depending on turn out.
With three Republicans on the ballot, can any one of them surpass Bustamantes total? It will be near impossible unless Schwarzeneggers presence causes a larger turnout of those who normally dont vote and they vote for him. This could be referred to as a non-aligned voting bloc and could carry Arnold over the top. But such a scenario cant be counted on.
Republicans and conservatives, we have to get our act together and support one and only one candidate by well before the October 7 election.
Otherwise sure victory and loss for the Democrats will have turned in to ignominious defeat yet again.
And worse, wed be saddled with Cruz Bustamante as California Governor. And you thought Davis was bad.
Bustamante has the dem machine behind him. They have not yet even begun to move.
