Teen Awarded $40,000 In Amusement Park Lawsuit

Company Declines Comment On Court's Decision

POSTED: 11:53 a.m. EDT August 13, 2003 UPDATED: 5:03 p.m. EDT August 13, 2003

MUSKEGON, Mich -- Cedar Fair LP, of Sandusky, Ohio, has paid $40,000 to settle a lawsuit filed by a teenager who was injured two years ago in a ride accident at one of the company's amusement parks in Michigan.

Lashana Brown, of Portage, Mich., was 14 at the time of the accident at Michigan's Adventure Park.

She suffered cuts to her knees, which caused permanent scars, when the "Chaos" ride collapsed on July 30, 2001, with 33 people aboard. Many riders were trapped for hours, including some who were stuck hanging upside down.

A July 15 order was signed by Muskegon County, Mich., Circuit Judge James Graves and agreed to by both parties.

Brown's lawyer, Edward Annen, said the settlement provided just compensation.

J. Michael Vassar, an attorney for Cedar Fair, declined to comment.

"Chaos" -- a rotating disc that tilts into the air while riders spin around in individual cars -- and emergency crews had to saw through the wreckage to get to them.

Hmm. Was there any internal damage to the young lady's knees? Any permanent impairment of knee function? Or is a scar - on a non-obvious body part - worth k$40?

Considering how much worse things could have been, management probably were more than happy to settle for that amount and be done with it.

Probably, but, it's yet another example of the "lawsuit tax" making everything more expensive here in America...
