India and China were vastly wealthier and more ancient than Europe, but science simply did not exist in either of these ancient civilizations.

Know what Walker means by this? Chinese were drilling for natural gas 1,000 years ago and the metallurgy of both areas was more advanced than the west. Is Walker defining "science" as a method and relegating Asian technology as the creation of artisans?
