Yes, he does have enthusiasm!
I have always found it amazing that so many breeds of dogs will exhibit the traits of their breed without being taught. My Lab LIVED to retrieve. It was his greatest joy, and he was never taught the behavior. Even when I wasn't throwing something for him to bring back to me, he would retrieve anything he could find, like socks on the floor, whatever. He would drop it into my hand with such pride.........like it was a great treasure he was bringing me.
Likewise, from the time Bear was a puppy he has rooted around under the bushes looking for "something". I have since learned that in Germany Dachshunds were bred to hunt badgers along the perimeter of their owner's property and were taught to be fearless in tunneling into a badger hole after them. I assume that is what Bear has been searching for all these years. Poor thing, he does't even know what a badger looks like.
