Woman thwarts attacker inside her home
The Kansas City Star ^ | 08/12/03 | LINDA MAN

An Independence woman managed to fight off an attacker who forced his way into her home and tried to rape her Monday night, Independence police said.

The attack occurred about 9 p.m. near Crysler and South avenues. Police said the 26-year-old woman had just returned from grocery shopping with her 8-year-old daughter and 5-year-old son when someone knocked on the door.

According to police:

After the woman unlocked the door, a man shoved his way in and threw her onto the living room couch. The woman tried to call 911, but the assailant flung the phone away.

After the assailant failed to take off her pants, he removed his shorts and masturbated. He then got dressed and left.

Police said the children saw the attack.

"Stranger-home invasions are uncommon," police spokesman Bill Pross said. "This is pretty bold."

The assailant is described as a white man in his late teens, about 6 feet tall with a medium build. He had a crew cut, wore blue denim shorts and a red pullover T-shirt with a light horizontal stripe.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Independence police detective unit at (816) 325-7330.

How considerate of him to leave a DNA sample.

OK, it's 9 PM, per the article, and someone knocks on the door. Now why - unless she's expecting someone - why would she open the door?

Quite frankly, if someone knocks on my door and I'm not expecting them, I don't answer at all. But a .40 cal Ruger P94 is in my hand...and if they knock a second time, the safety comes off.

I'm not criticizing the victim, but I cannot imagine opening the door like that.

I had a COP knock on my door a few weeks ago during the wee hours. Shouted "hello" at the door and no answer. (No peephole.) I panicked and called 911, who told me that it was a cop, who was investigating after a neighbor across the street reported noises just outside her back door. Well gee, why didn't he say he was a cop when I shouted at the door? I am in an area where guns in the home are not banned (yet) and to greet that cop with gun in hand would not have been a real good scene.

Interesting. A similar situation occured to me last night at around 1.30 am. The doorbell rang and there was a knock on the door. If I did not have a peep-hole on the door, I would not have been able to see four cops standing outside. If I did not KNOW (no peep-hole) I'd have my Ruger .357 magnum cocked and behind my back as I'd cautiously open the door. As it turned out, the fuzz were investigating a noise complaint from across the hall where the perp's neighbors had called the fuzz.

I told the cops that "those people should go back to friggin' Nicuragua where they belong."

Can't wait to have our new house done next month so we can get the hell out of this apt. Living six months in a 2 br apt. doesn't match up to 30 years in a 12 rm house.

I agree with you! That's why I don't unlock the door, don't open the door, and, therefore, do not greet anyone at the door. But your idea of calling 911 and finding out is excellent!

This can't be. Academics insist that rape is a crime of violence and not sex. He should have beaten her up instead of getting his jollies before leaving.

A similar situation happened to my neighbor several months ago. He said that the cop was undoubtedly aware that my neighbor's right hand, which was concealed by his door when he opened it, was holding his shotgun. The cop was investigating a burglary report from an adjacent road.

We live in a rural area with large spaces between our homes, but we are very self-sufficient. I needed use of a tractor once and had to call of the third volunteer because two tractors were already too many. If I called for an armed response, the militia would be there in a blink.

We were on vacation once and a neighbor reported that a delivery truck had entered our driveway and that they had proceeded to find out what they wanted. A second neighbor independently reported having seen the first neighbor responding.

That does it... we're packing up our bags and moving to your neighborhood. That's what I call a safe(r) friendly environment. God Bless America!

From the article: "After the assailant failed to take off her pants, he removed his shorts and masturbated. He then got dressed and left."

Your response: "This can't be. Academics insist that rape is a crime of violence and not sex. He should have beaten her up instead of getting his jollies before leaving."

If the above statement from the article exemplifies your definition of sex, it's time I reconsider my strong opposition to sex education in the schools.

Oh, it was sick and deviant. But my point is that the assailant chose sexual gratification over violence when his attempt to rape was thwarted. If, as many academics claim, rape is an act primarily of violence, he should have chosen to beat the woman for frustrating him rather than stand their like an idiot jerking himself off.

I believe that rape can certainly have a violent element to it but I do not believe that rape can be detached, in many cases, from a perverse desire to get sexual gratification. I am simply venting frustration at those for whom sex can never be a bad thing so they go through absurd lengths to claim that rape has no sexual component.

Oops...Slow down there...One-third of my firearms are now stored out of state and the Kalifornia Supreme Court has ruled that I have no right to keep and bear arms. They will soon outlaw our self-sufficiency and declare us all criminals. You don't want to be here then.
