Take a look at Lawrence Keeley's
War Before Civilization. Unfortunately, Amazon doesn't seem to have a long enough free excerpt to get to the critical story. Keeley tells about trying to get a research grant to study prehistoric "fortifications" in Europe. Several times, his grant requests were denied. Then he changed his request to study prehistoric "enclosures" and his request was granted. Keeley shows the results of one of his digs, with hundreds of arrowheads, concentrated mainly around the perimeter and openings in the "enclosure". Perhaps they serve a "ceremonial" purpose...
Keeley gives plenty of examples and I've run into more than a few young brains full of mush that buy into this stuff. An extension is the theory that Europe was a peaceful matriarchy of humans living like bonobos and worshiping the Mother Goddess until those evil patriarchy-loving warriors came along and imposed a male-centered religion on them. Not much evidence for either but they both make for a good story that meshes well with leftist and feminist thought (or what passes for thought).
