The Richmond Fed manufacturing index covers activity in the fifth Federal Reserve District, which includes the District of Columbia, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina and most of West Virginia. The fifth district produces approximately 9 percent of the nation's gross domestic product.
