George Bush's Terminator problem
Arnold Schwarzenegger may be the GOP's best shot yet at a California comeback. But his playboy ways and pro-choice politics make him anathema to the president's allies on the Christian right.

Aug. 12, 2003 | SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- A few months after the U.S. Supreme Court called off the counting and awarded the presidency to George W. Bush, a New York Times reporter asked Republican strategist Karl Rove about the future for Republicans in California. The overall outlook was bleak. Al Gore had trounced Bush in the state without even trying; Democrats held virtually every state-wide elective office and a huge lead in voter registration; and the California Republican Party was dysfunctional and in disarray. For the chief White House political strategist, there was just one bright spot in the Golden State: the hope that Arnold Schwarzenegger might someday run for governor. "That would be nice," Rove told The Times. "That would be really nice. That would be really, really nice."
Well, maybe.
Together with more than 190 other candidates who filed papers in time to meet last Saturday's deadline, Arnold Schwarzenegger is running for governor of California now. And while Bush told reporters Friday that he thought Schwarzenegger would make a "good governor," the White House may soon discover that a Terminator candidacy is not so nice after all. Although Schwarzenegger's run to replace Gov. Gray Davis is playing like the second coming for mainstream Republicans, it threatens to open a nasty rift between the Bush administration and the right-wing Christians to whom it usually kow-tows.

A lot of people fail to know that Schwarzenegger campaigned for George Bush (41) way back when.
He campaigned for him, was there on the platform with him, rallying the people for him.
People say he's a RINO, but he was there for George Bush back when.
Does nayone know if he campaigned for Dole or W?

Playboy ways? The man's been married to the same woman for 20 years. In Hollywood that's practically a record.

Don't get me wrong, Arnold is a pretty cool charachter, but what I don't like is that he is pro-gun control, pro-abortion, and is "status quo" on maintaining social programs, not to mention his checkered stance on immigration. He doesn't sound like a conservative to me.

True. He is also an excellent businessman and proven leader. Just don't like all his ideas.

Rift in the party over Arnold? Look if it Arnold wins or he loses, it's not going to effect me. No one is threatening to bolt if he's elected.

No, it's just standard procedure to make fun of Salon's financial collapse whenever someone posts one of their articles. (Of which there seem to be fewer and fewer new ones each day as time progresses. There have been days when their daily newsletter consists of a single new story.)

A lot of people fail to know that Schwarzenegger campaigned for George Bush A lot of people fail to comment on the fact that he strongly opposed the impeachment of Bill Clinton. In fact, in my time on FR and our local(California) chapter site, I haven't seen a single comment on that fact by an Ahnold supporter.
People say he's a RINO
"I was ashamed to call myself a Republican." -Schwarzenegger on his feelings about Clinton's impeachment. Apparently he doesn't even like the name.

"Bttt" just means "Bump to the top", a blank post intended only to push the thread to the top of the Latest Posts page because they think more people need to see it. (Personally, I find that really old-time Freepers are more likely to use "bttt," while those who signed up in 2000 or later tend to just post the word "bump".)
