WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States should seek a new U.N. resolution on Iraq to help secure greater international support in reconstruction and peacekeeping efforts, a key Senate Republican said on Sunday.
Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Richard Lugar of Indiana said a U.N. resolution would also provide "greater legitimacy" to commercial contracts in Iraq.
"I think we need to seek a resolution or more resolutions from the United Nations to give more legitimacy, more reason why other nations will come to the floor -- specifically India, perhaps Germany," he told reporters.
France, Russia and Germany, who all opposed the U.S.-led war that ousted Iraqi President Saddam Hussein, have indicated they would send peacekeeping troops or help in other ways if the United Nations had a bigger role.
However, the Bush administration has said the current U.N. resolution provides enough authority for other countries to contribute.
Lugar said the White House should also provide Congress with a 5-year budget plan for providing security, humanitarian aid and other expenses related to rebuilding Iraq.
"At this time, the administration must give a much better idea of our expenses over the next four or five years in time," he said.

No way should we allow the U.N. to get in the middle of this. Most of the countries in the U.N. have helped Saddam for far to long, we freepers have seen the evidence in abundence while the media continues to ignore it.
The Republican's in Congress need to get a grip and realize if we let the U.N. in then in effect we reward those countries who put us (America) in this position of having to go in and free the Iraqi people from that brutal P.O.S. who ruled over them.
Screw the U.N. we can handle the job.

""I think we need to seek a resolution or more resolutions from the United Nations to give more legitimacy to..."
Either the actions in Iraq were and are legitimate, or the actions never were or are not legitimate.
Therefore, how legitimate is Lugee's request? Is he saying that the us action is illegitimate or is he saying that the us doesn't hold the moral legitimacy to declare that something is legitimate? How will allowing countries (that wish to delegitimize everything that the US IS) to have an open forum to diminish us legitimacy benefit our legitimacy?
I'll stop now...

There is something in the legitimizing necessity so one can make contracts. That's it as far as I am concerned. There will be no rush to help us any way.

What type of contracts? The US is surely the most legitimate govt in the world as a party in a contract.

What will Lugar's eventual payoff be and WHO will write the check?

We don't need no stinkin UN. We do need to pump the oil, split the money & provide considerable aid to the families of OUR soldiers who have been killed or wounded. Sounds like typical Luger talk. He do like the big gov solution to everything.

Koffe Cup Anon-he was in charge of 'oil for food'. They said he had control over all the money. Wonder where it are?

"They said he had control over all the money"
3% for KOFI, off the top. Also, liked how weapons and contraband got mixed in with the food. Imagine all the 'brown envelopes' handed to Kofi, "the burnt match".
I studied the oil for Food prograsm- what a beaurocratic money sucking graft giving scam.

Luger is one of the few republicans that is a CFR member.

If we bring in the UN, we bring in their corruption as well.

I agree. I think that the new Iraqi govt will be signing contracts on their own behalf. I just want to make sure we get our 50% cut...};-)

We should pass Ron Paul's res to get out of the UN, not let them in after we have already done the hardest part
