Most-Favored Terrorists

UNTIL THE EARLY morning of June 17, when French SWAT teams went over the walls, the riverside compound on this quiet street served as a political headquarters for the most famous (and infamous) group trying to overthrow the government of Iran: the Mojahedin e-Khalq (People’s Mojahedin), which is listed by the United States and the European Union as a terrorist organization. For years the outfit was a pawn of Saddam Hussein. But now the Muj, who are some of the Iranian ayatollahs’ oldest enemies, may be America’s new friends and thus, perhaps, France’s new enemies.

The Rajavis fled to exile in France in 1981 after a powerful bomb evidently planted by their minions wiped out several of their theocratic enemies. The blast killed the secretary general of the Islamic Republic Party, four cabinet ministers, six ministerial undersecretaries and 27 members of parliament—but failed to bring down the clerical regime. Nor did a succession of other bombings later in the year. Retribution on their followers was horrific. And the uprising they’d hoped for never materialized.

One key could be the U.S. connection. When the American military conquered Iraq, it gave the little Mojahedin army of 5,000-or-so fighters special treatment. Never mind the group’s official terrorist label and its long ties to Saddam, the 4th Infantry Division’s commander, Gen. Ray Odierno, spent two long days negotiating a truce with the organization. When the talks finally ended and he spoke to the press, Odierno was more than charitable. “It is not a surrender. It is an agreement to disarm and consolidate,” he said, adding that “on the surface they appear to have some of the same goals the U.S. has in forming democracy and fighting oppression.”

I can not rejoice when I read that human beings have been destroyed in a firey explosion. But I will not lose one second of sleep over the thought of repressive theocrats being punished for their crimes. Also note that no civilians were killed in this attack.

And for the press who keeps trying to dismiss support for the group and its leadership as cultish, I say it looks like the latest member is a General in the United States Army! Don't tell me that he doesn't know what he is talking about when he is on the ground, in their face!

Monarchists, I woln't lose any sleep for you either. You can shake hands all day long but if you don't get into the fight then all you are is noise!

It doesn't matter who brings a representative form of government to Iran so long as it is for the people by the people! The current method with which we define terrorism would put the founding fathers of this country on it. These people are willing to fight for their ideals and are being punished for it. The people that wrote the US constitution had no idea what the US would look like today but they fought for the concept anyway. It payed off for you and me didn't it?

The PMOI are a bunch of commies who sided with Saddam Hussein during the war against their countrymen. They've murdered Americans in terror attacks (although that was a while ago and they've behaved since them). They are NOT a suitable "Northern Alliance" for dealing with Iran. They are of no use to us. The only reason we worked so hard negotiating with them is that it would be a pain to fight them. They are dedicated, trained, and have literally nowhere to go--no other country would accept them--so they could cause a lot of trouble for us. This way, we disarm them quietly.

You didn't share much with your reply.

Are you happy or upset that the MEK killed a large number of clerics? Are you happy or upset that the MEK is the largest threat to the world’s worst theocracy?

My countrymen who were killed were not in Iran to sell lollypops. If we bring the debate to what is going on today instead of 20+ years ago, then I'd say the impressions of my countrymen are quite favorable.

I don't think the General in the article was affiliated to any of the political generalizations in your tag line. If your tag line is directed to me then you couldn't be more wrong about my politics.

“For the people by the people” is a very American concept as I am a patriotic citizen of the United States and veteran.

What are you?

Is this what you call debate? I hope no one confuses you for a patriot.

I think former members of the terrorist MEK who have seen the error of their ways are a good source of information about this Marxist group.

I suppose it is asking too much. Why would you think when you just want to teach? Are you capable of debate or are your politics so fragile? I’ve read these articles before but fortunately I read the country study of Iran at the library of congress before hand. I concede that those not willing to debate are winning the day.

The LOC says the MEK didn’t start a shooting war until the Ayatollah ordered them shot on sight. Your site slips on that on. Is there some reason why our troops haven’t found all these WMDs being kept by the MEK? Particularly when the exact location had been pinpointed by a former member. It is also a documented fact that the MEK turns over enemy combatants it captures to the Red Cross.

Go ahead… Flush democratic debate down the toilet. You’ve already forgotten what democracy is. Who needs it anyway? So the years spent serving my country weren’t to uphold and defend the constitution after all.

Go wave the flag, fight your communist / terrorist / whateverist threat and teach to those who don’t know any better.

Show me a picture of MEK tanks suppressing a Kurdish uprising. Show me the evidence that Saddam funded them and that they trained Iraqi Special Forces. Either these are feminists who are experts at political spin and not much else or they’re not!

I don’t understand how it is so easy to miss these blatant contradictions.
