In a free-market economy, the consumer reigns. In a nation which refuses to defend itself from the government subsidized mercantilism of other nations, the consumer becomes unemployed/underemployed/underpaid, and single-purchase trinkets offered at low, low costs are hardly compensation when keeping a roof over one's family's head remains so expensive and the need so persistant.

This may be true, but what is your solution?
Protectionism?
Take a look at France's economy, and you'll see what Protectionism does for a nation. There economy is in the toilet.
Are you suggesting A policy agenda that seeks to maximize the number of tariffs and subsidies against other countries?
I say we should let economic efficiency decide where people and resources are best employed.
